Power, Panopticon and Electronic Surveillance

The main aim of this diploma thesis is analysis of power, surveillance and control in today's society and their examples in new electronic analytical space that emerges within developement of information and communication networks. Hypothesis of this diploma thesis is supposition of two faces of surveillance and untenability of dystopia theories of surveillance in today's society. Thus this diploma thesis shows that surveillance goes together with restrictions, but also freedom at the same time. This diploma thesis describes power and power relationships theory of Michel Foucault and theory of surveillance according David Lyon, that are theoretic base for analysis of character of power and surveillance in today's society. Other important authors that I present theories of in my diploma thesis are primarily Gilles Deleuze, and Paul Virilio who emphasise shift from mode of prison to mode of control that is key to today's society. This diploma thesis describes the character of power and social control in today's society and character of today's subjects and objects of power and knowledge. I will also try to answer whether we can consider surveillance as the Electronic Panopticon or not.
