Effect of mineral nutrient availability and flooding on the growth of Carex acuta in a mesocosm experiment

This MSc thesis is part of project of the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic GACR 526/09/1545 Importance of newly assimilated carbon for the plant-soil interactions in wet grassland ecosystems in varying environmental conditions, which focuses on the effects of eutrophication on selected wet meadows with mineral or organic soil in the Trebon Basin Biosphere Reserve. The results of this project will serve as a basis for developing a suitable ecosystem management for wet meadows, especially for sites registered as nature reserves. A mesocosm experiments was carried out with Carex acuta, a dominant species of wet meadows that has already been subject of many studies. The aim of this work was to find out how C. acuta responds to different levels of fertilization and soil flooding under controlled conditions. All factors studied significantly affected at least some growth characteristics. The period of sampling (spring, summer) affected the live standing stock and the dry weight of one tiller. Fertilization affected the numer of generative and vegetative tillers, the dry weights of live and dead standing stock and the dry weight of one tiller.
The influence of extremal climatic phenomena at the recultivated and succession areas in Třeboňsko Protected Landscapa Area

PLA Třeboňsko is located in the southeastern part of South Bohemia, and has an area of 700 km {$^2$}. It is an extraordinary region, where preserved valuable natural assets, but also many hundreds of years of human transformation of the cultural landscape. Basic river basin axis Třeboňsko are Třeboňsko Lužnice river in the floodplain which are 14 lakes created after gravel extraction. Coast lakes were part of forestry artificially reclaimed, partly remained left natural succession. Extreme weather events (floods, snow and strong wind calamity) in 2002, 2005, 2007 have different effects on the current status of coastal vegetation rehabilitated, compared with a similar old natural secondary succession.
