The dissertation focuses on the texts from the inner side of the outer sarcophagus from the tomb of priest Iufaa at Abusir, dated to the Saite-Persian period. The aim of the thesis is to present transcription, translation and analysis of these so far unpublished texts. The work is based on a primary epigraphical survey in situ in the seasons 2015-2019, as well as on the archive documentation made during the excavation of the tomb. A significant part of the decoration, covering the part around the head of the deceased and great parts of the northern and southern walls of the inner side of Iufaa's outer sarcophagus, consists of hitherto completely unknown and unnatested texts. The rest of the decoration consists of an extended variant of the Pyramid Texts offering ritual and related texts. Each spell is transcripted in hieroglyphs, transliterated, translated and commented. In the case that parallel versions exist, the text is compared with them, and the differences are commented on. The decoration of the sarcophagus is also compared with the contemporary tombs and put in the context of the Saite-Persian necropolis at Abusir, Late Period religious background and specifics surrounding the person of priest Iufaa.

The aim of the present thesis is translation, detailed analysis and interpretation of the Coffin Texts of the Late-period tomb of Iufaa at Abusir. The corpus of these texts is unique, because except for a few text sequences, which were common in the Late Period, there are texts that are not preserved elsewhere in the Late Period and sometimes only exist in highly fragmentary Middle Kingdom versions. The Coffin Texts found on Iufaa's outer sarcophagus and on the walls of his burial chamber consist only of such uncommon texts. Some of these are also placed on the inner sarcophagus, whereall theremaining Coffin Texts spells are also located. The thesis presents a translation and analysis of the individual texts, focusing on their development, tradition and changes between the Middle Kingdom and the Late Period, including commentaries on grammar and language use as well as on the content. Iufaa's versions of these texts significantly contribute to our understanding and interpretation of some Coffin Texts spells and present a wider view on Egyptian religious texts and their interpretation, as well as on the textual transmission and work of Egyptian priests and scribes themselves.

Hu, Sia and Heka in the Coffin Texts

The present thesis deals with the concept of magic and the magical power of words, skript and language in ancient Egypt, considering the importance of remembering and memory, based on the interpretation of certain spells of the Coffin Texts. A careful analysis of these texts indicates, that it was necessary to remember the right word(s) (Hw), to be endowed with some knowledge or to know the way how to look at a given text (sjA), and thus to get an understanding of magic (HkA). The magical power of these texts was very closely connected with language and script, and also with cognizance and knowledge - and sacred knowledge should have been known by any person using it. Thanks to iconic character of hieroglyphs and the great possibility of puns and ambiguity, these texts, or parts of them, might have contained implicit information, expressed indirectly, using metaphors or even pictures, which might have served as a reminders of an entire (covert) meaning. There were only a few people who were able to read and understand these texts and they had to know their context and probably also the oral tradition beyond them. These facts also show the possibility that these texts could have been studied and used by priests and persons with the necessary knowledge during their lifetime. The idea of magical power...
