Media Portrayal of Abortion in the 21st Century of Poland and Czech Republic

The aim of the submitted bachelor thesis is to gain a deeper understanding of the development of media coverage of the topic of artificial termination of pregnancy in the context of political and social events, especially in Poland, and their influence on public discussion and perception of this sensitive issue. In the period from 2017 to 2023, the thesis examines the media coverage of abortion in the two most influential and widely read media outlets - in the Czech Republic, it is the most visited online medium idnes.cz, and in Poland, it is Rzeczpospolita - rp.pl. Through quantitative research and theoretical analysis, it demonstrates that the events in Poland in 2020, when there was a tightening of rules for performing abortions, led to a tenfold increase in media coverage of this topic in Poland in the presentation of rp.pl; there was no significant increase in coverage in the Czech idnes.cz, and the medium did not react particularly to this situation. Conversely, similar events in the USA, where in 2022 the Supreme Court returned the power to decide on the legalization of abortions to individual states, resulted in a twofold increase in media coverage of abortions in idnes.cz.
