Volunteer as a team member in an organization providing social services
LEŠUKOVÁ, Lucie
In this bachelor thesis, I deal with the issue of volunteering in social services, with the aim to determine the role of a volunteer in a team of workers within an organization providing social services. Partial objective were to identify the role that volunteers have inside the team and characterise the relationships between volunteers and professional employees in the teams of these organizations. In order to achieve this aim, the strategy of qualitative research, the method of interviewing, and the technique of semi-guided interviews, were chosen. The interviews were conducted with ten professionals and ten volunteers working in five different organizations providing social services in the capital city of Prague. Subsequently, I conducted an evaluation of the results of the interviews by the clustering method. The research results demonstrate that the role of volunteers in organizations is viewed very positively; professional employees consider volunteers to be beneficial and recognize them as part of the organization's team. Even volunteers feel like a part of the team, but some have stated that although they see their role in the team as worthwhile, they would rather regard it as ancillary, complementing the main work carried out by professionals. The research results also demonstrate that the relationships between professionals and volunteers are viewed positively by both sides, despite of occasional disagreements. Concurrently, research has not proved whether the quality of the relationships is influenced by whether the relationships are formal or informal. The results of this work can contribute to improving the public's informativeness of volunteering, specifically, that a volunteer has a place within the group of people working in social services, and that he/she can be a full-fledged member of the team.
