At the end of the 15th century the hitherto cordial relations between LithuaniaPoland and Muscovy that had prevailed in previous decades to ok on a strongly confrontational nature. It is this initial phase of clashes between these two states that I have selected as the theme of my work. In this thesis I have attempted to both outline the mutual relationships of the rulers of these states before, after and main1y during this conflict, as well as their approaches to it. The conflict is placed within the wider regional context, as it was the attitudes of neighbouring states in both eastem and central Europe that had an impact on the outcome of the first Lithuanian-Muscovite War. The work is written in chronological order and split into 5 chapters. The introductory chapter (Lithuania, Poland and the State oj Muscovy over the centuries) is dedicated to the development of the Lithuanian state and the Russian lands from the 12th century to the year 1485. The main focus of attention here are the events that influenced affairs within the two countries and the relationship between them. The next four chapters are the heart of the work.
