Sleeping issues in the senior age
KREJCÁRKOVÁ, Jana
The bachelor thesis deals with the issue of sleeping in senior age. Objectives: To map what non-pharmacological interventions are performed by nurses in nursing care for seniors over 65 years in the field of sleeping. Then, to find out what activities are performed by people over the age of 65 in the field of sleep hygiene. And at last, to find out what problems occur in people over the age of 65 in the field of sleeping. Methodology and research set: Based on the objectives, research questions were created. What non-pharmacological interventions are performed by nurses as part of the provided care for people over 65 in the field of sleep? What activities do people over 65 perform in the field of sleep hygiene? What problems occur in people over 65 in the field of sleep? For the research survey, we have chosen a qualitative research strategy, where the method of questioning was used. The data collection technique was based on semi-structured interviews, which were conducted with seniors over 65 at their chosen location, in hospital and retirement homes. The research was also conducted with nurses in the aftercare department and nurses who worked in a retirement home. Two research sets were used for the research survey - "nurses" and "seniors". The "nurses" research group consisted of a total of 6 nurses. Deliberate selection of nurses was used, where the basic criterion was the total practice length of at least ten years. The research group "seniors" consisted of a total of 9 seniors. The basic criterion for the selection of seniors was the full preservation of cognitive functions. The obtained data were processed by open coding - pencil and paper method. Results: Based on the analysis of the obtained data, we created categories and subcategories. In the research group "nurses", we set 4 categories and 10 subcategories and in the research group "seniors", we set 7 categories and 13 subcategories. The results of the research survey have shown that nurses have extensive experience with the issue of sleeping in seniors. Most of them solve this problem by activating the senior during the day, medication according to the doctor's prescription or trying to satisfy their sleep habits. We have found that most seniors try to maintain sleep hygiene, but often their health does not allow it. Many problems are solved by pharmacotherapy in many cases. Recommendations for practice: We recommend including the issue of sleep hygiene in the care of the elderly in the education of nurses. We also recommend using the cooperation of the nurse with the senior's family in the field of sleep hygiene.
