The Language and Style of Czech Tabloid Press

The diploma thesis `The Language and Style of Czech Tabloid Press{\crq} explores verbal, graphic and ideographical devices used in the present tabloid press (Aha!, Blesk, ŠÍP). The aim of this diploma thesis is to find and evaluate these language devices. The thesis is based on the analysis of language material collected over the period of one year, from December 2007 to November 2008. It deals with the headlines, their types and functions in the text, with the selection of the photographs in relation to the information presented, and with the themes which are typical of the tabloid press. The main part of the thesis analyses lexical units (such as a parable, a personification, a metaphor, an allusion, evaluative adjectives, set expressions, expressive words, neologisms, loan words etc.) and evaluates them in term of their suitability. The introductory part of the thesis contains explanation of terminology and a brief history of tabloid press. The thesis is not divided into a separate theoretical and practical part; instead each chapter contains theoretical explanation followed by authentic examples illustrating the point.
