Possibilities for estimating the volume of traded forms of CITES organisms
JIRKŮ, Renáta
This thesis focuses on the analysis of the volume of trade in commodities from CITES organisms. The theoretical part discusses the nature of interdisciplinarity and its contribution in the fight against unsustainable wildlife trade. The practical part of the thesis provides a detailed analysis of the trade volume of the ten species from the seven taxonomic groups studied that had the largest number of records in 2020. The analysis consisted of finding the percentage of traded commodities that can be converted to whole organism equivalent and approximating the conversion factors for these commodities. The graphical representation of the range of values among the data examined and the statistical comparison of the proportion of each type of data for systematic groups present that the lowest proportion of data for which conversion to whole organism equivalent was possible are invertebrates and amphibians. The largest proportion of these data was for cartilaginous fish, fish, reptiles and mammals. The thesis presents an overview of the allowed traded commodities with preferred and alternative units. This overview is given by CITES and the course of analysis yielded a conclusion that gives a recommendation that it would be advisable to monitor these standards and ensure that the traded consignments are inspected, this would greatly assist the correct interpretation of the trade monitoring data.
Illegal trade in animals in the Czech Republic, analysis and comparison of the Czech Environmental Inspectorate database and CITES Trade Database
JIRKŮ, Renáta
This bachelor thesis focuses on illegal wild animals and wild plants trade in the Czech Republic. The thesis discusses general facts about illegal trade and wild animals products. In the practical part of the bachelor thesis the database of the Czech Environmental Inspectorate and the global trade database CITES are evaluated. It was found that the total number of reported animal captures is different in both databases. According to non-public data from the Czech Environmental Inspectorate, 919 illegally traded specimens were seized in the period of time 2011-2020. On the other hand, the publicly available CITES trade database indicates that 42 seizures were made in the same period. From this fact there are significant differences in the traded taxonomic groups, determined forms and in the level of representation of the export countries from which the specimens originate, etc.
