Experimental software VST synthesizer based on the principle of granular synthesis, the parameters of which can be also controlled by various properties of the light spectrum
Kuchař, Vojtěch ; Indrák, Michal (referee) ; Dlouhý, Dan (advisor)
This thesis addresses the development of a VST and standalone plug-in based on a granular sampler, whose parameters (grain length, AD envelope and overlap amount) can be controlled by the average hue, saturation and lightness values of pixels captured by a web camera. The individual parameters can also be adjusted using controls on the tool’s panel. Additionally, the plug-in is capable of functioning as a simple sampler.
Experimental software tool focused on sound creation through sequences
Trubačík, Jan ; Dlouhý, Dan (referee) ; Indrák, Michal (advisor)
The goal of this bachelor’s thesis is the creation of an experimental musical software tool, which is designed for generating music through the use of sequences. The tool was created using Pure Data, a visual programming environment. It decodes strings of plain text and converts them to sequences of MIDI messages in real time. The text of the thesis illustrates a theoretical background and the tool’s structure and way of use.
Spectral analysis of historical pianos
Pokorný, Marek ; Indrák, Michal (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the spectral analysis of historical pianos in aim to identify and compare their acoustic and spectral characteristics. Three examples of pianos were analysed, including a significant piano owned by the composer Leoš Janáček. The analysis was performed on measured piano samples using Fourier transformation in MATLAB, with an emphasis on spectral parameters such as spectral centroid, flatness, skewness, sharpness and roughness, and on the visual representation of a spectrum over time -- the spectrogram. The results of the spectral analysis were used to interpret and evaluate differences in timbre of the pianos and their probable causes. The theoretical part of the thesis provides a brief overview of the history and design of the piano, explains the spectral descriptors used, and examines the properties of musical tones and the influence of psychoacoustics on the perception of pitch and timbre.
Experimental electroacoustic musical instrument
Hrdlička, Matěj ; Dlouhý, Dan (referee) ; Indrák, Michal (advisor)
This bachelor thesis deals with the design and construction of an experimental electroacoustic musical instrument inspired by analogue synthesizers from Dubreq -- stylophones. In contrast to the original stylophones, this Stylophone processes the audio signal in digital form. Stylophone contains two independent sound generators, which are two Arduino NANO development boards. In the theoretical part of the thesis, the historical development of the models of the original stylophones is described and the circuitry and sound generation method of the original Stylophone from 1968 is described. The practical part describes the circuit design, PCB, Arduino code and device construction. Also described are the different sounds generated by the instrument, their frequency analysis and a comparison of the sound character of the instrument with the sound analysis of the original Stylophone S1 from Dubreq. The last chapter of the thesis deals with the description of the techniques of playing the Stylophone and their notation.
Experimental musical instrument, combining the principles of cracklebox, noisebox and analog delay unit using tape cassettes
Richter, Kryštof ; Indrák, Michal (referee) ; Dlouhý, Dan (advisor)
The aim of the bachelor thesis is to design experimental mechanical-electric musical instrument. In this case, the instrument is specified as noisebox and cracklebox with added delay effect unit constructed along the lines of the original tape echo but with use of magnetofonic cassetes. In the theoretical introduction classification of electroacoustic instruments and their history is described, all with added examples. Terms such as hardware hacking and circuit bending, magnetic tape and tape echo are showed further in the chapter. In the second chapter preliminary construction plan of the instrument, from which will the later construction follow on is described, all with added diagrams and schematics. Third chapter contains the description of realization of the instrument.
Application for Demonstrating Principles of Hybrid Sound Synthesis
Prokop, Šimon ; Indrák, Michal (referee) ; Schimmel, Jiří (advisor)
The master thesis deals with the description and application of the main principles of sound signal generators contained in hybrid synthesizers. The individual methods and ways of generating audio signals were first studied and based on the theory, scripts were then created in Matlab to demonstrate the principle functions of the individual generators. Based on the logic of these scripts, a polyphonic hybrid synthesizer was created in VST3 format in the C++ language with the JUCE framework. The synthesizer allows the user to choose between basic readout methods Wavecycle and Wavetable, audio signal filtering or oversampling of the overall signal process.
Set of software plugins for Musescore scorewriter application that adds aleatoric, chance and indeterminacy operations on selected musical material
Káčer, Kamil ; Indrák, Michal (referee) ; Mojdl, Edgar (advisor)
This master's thesis examines the capabilities of notografic software Musescore for plugin develompment. The goal is to create aleatoric functions which helps composers with composition of aleatoric work. Plugins enable work with pitch, duration, octave position and probability of occurrence in a music part.
VST granular plugin with experimental input and output settings
Kalinič, Jan ; Dlouhý, Dan (referee) ; Indrák, Michal (advisor)
This thesis discusses the development of a plug-in module that is able to implement granular synthesis with help of experimental methods of parameter value settings. Graphic designs and schemes were created in the vector graphics editor Inkscape. The separate plug-in was programmed in C++ language using the JUCE framework and VST3 technology. With a use of this module, granular synthesis can be performed over a predetermined sample, but also over the stream of an audio channel of a digital audio station. The module also includes blocks with other types of sound synthesis, which can also be modified in experimental ways. Thanks to its properties, the plug-in can be applied as an effect over one sound channel in the mixing section of an audio station.
The spectral and directional analysis of xylophone, vibraphone and glockenspiel
Hoffman, Pavel ; Indrák, Michal (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
Bacherlor‘s thesis deals with spectral analysis and directional characteristics of idiophonic instruments, xylophone, vibraphone and glockenspiel. It analyzes various details during spectral analysis, that could have an effect on the spectrum of a given instrument, and especially on its inharmonicity, thus analyzing its effect on the hardness of mallet, dynamics and the location of the mallet striking the bars (stones, wooden plates). It examines the changes in the harmonic range and the formant areas of instruments. The thesis further describes the mallets, the instruments themselves, theoretical base and the means by which the sound samples were acquired and processed.
Experimental Software Musical Instrument Controlled by Light Color
Liska, Matej ; Indrák, Michal (referee) ; Dlouhý, Dan (advisor)
Bachelor thesis contains the theory for realization of experimental software instrument controlled by light color. It brings knowledge of sound and light waves and color pro- cessing. Besides others, it describes process of generating digital signals using additive synthesis, methods of signal processing and sonification techniques. It solves program- ming possibilities of creating, processing, playing and saving digital audio signals. The audio source is written in Java language on the JavaFX programming platform.
