Animosity as Ideology? Analysis of the Construction of the "West" in the Discursive Strategy of the Islamic State
Hvězda, Martin ; Ditrych, Ondřej (advisor) ; Földes, Kristián (referee)
Examining the ideological nature of Islamist movements can indicate in some way the ideological motivations of their members and explain why they intend to devote their often young lives to hating and fighting their perceived enemy. The radical terrorist organization Islamic State (we use the alternative name Daesh in the work) currently represents the most visible form of Islamic radicalism, and its ideological origins are also the main subject of our research. During the analysis of the complex ideology of Daesh, the work focuses on its specific component in the form of an articulated struggle with the West and hateful criticism of Western society. The initial hypothesis, which is then empirically verified, is based on the assumption of the existence of the historical roots of this ideology in the form of Salafist jihadism and Wahhabi theological doctrine. Using postmodern theoretical approaches together with the application of Foucault's genealogical method, our work carries out historical research supported by elements of critical discursive analysis in order to clarify the roots and formation of the anti-Western discourse, which is used in such a clear way precisely in the ideology of Daesh. We attempt to trace the creation of a discursive strategy across the history of Islamic thought and...
National interest? Analysis of the securitization strategy of the Czech security policy in counterterrorism
Hvězda, Martin ; Kučera, Tomáš (advisor) ; Bahenský, Vojtěch (referee)
The analysis of security policy, in its variations, regularly deals with the question of what each actor wants to promote in domestic or international politics, in other words, what is his interest. The term "national interest" is not an abstract category and a rhetorical turn legitimizing government action in front of the public audience or in dispute with political opposition. One of the aims of the presented thesis is to present the concept of national interest as a useful tool enabling closer research of domestic policy within the security context. Our main thematic focus, in which we examine the constitution of national interest, is the Czech counterterrorism policy in the context of the reaction of the Czech government and security forces to the terrorist attacks in Paris in autumn 2015 and in Brussels in March of the following year. An extraordinary measure after the attacks in Brussels in the form of the deployment of the Czech Army performing police tasks in mixed patrols in three Czech cities is for us a key manifestation of counterterrorism policy. This constitution of the security policy, we are further investigating. The main motivation is to explain the reasons why the mentioned security measure took place, which has no analogs in the history of the Czech Republic. We conclude that...
Czechs and multicultural society? Analysis of the current anti-Islamism in relation to anti-Semitism
Hvězda, Martin ; Charvát, Jan (advisor) ; Kubátová, Hana (referee)
The Czech nation, like the other, is characterized by many historically conditioned stereotypes that indicate possible reactions to certain impulse. The turbulent development of the last years in the world and especially the refugee crisis coming to Europe has caused many hate reactions and islamophobic pronouncement in Czech society. Some authors and scholars have begun to point to the possible similarities and analogies of contemporary anti-Islamism with the phenomenon of anti-Semitism, typically for the Czech atmosphere in past times. This bachelor thesis aims to analyse the theme with regard to the topicality. At the beginning is necessary to define the theoretical concepts of individual approaches and after that is text mainly focused on the specific parallels in the discursive level. The thesis attempts to point out the similarity of the argumentation logic of earlier anti-Semitism with the current wave of Islamophobia. At the same time, it is clear that, despite many criticisms, such comparison is possible and the rhetoric of both xenophobic approaches shows particular similarities. In addition, the thesis puts the whole issue in the context of Czech political culture, and in the concrete among the stereotypical qualities of the Czech nation. It defines the causal cause in the form of myth...
