Czech book designs of 1960s

The aim of this diploma thesis is to describe Czech book designs of the1960s within the field of contemporary art discourse and praxis. Book designs, for Czech designers, typographers and artists - limited by communist régime - was very common artistic platform moving between the fine and applied arts. Thus focusing on the description of institutional structures producing books in the 1960s is crucial in this thesis, however, insight into creative praxis and contemporary artistic discussion is equally important, too.

PAVEL PÁNEK AND CZECH PRESSED GLASS OF THE SIXTIES AND SEVENTIES

Principal message of this thesis is to introduce designer Pavel Pánek putting him into proper historical context and to reveal some of his unpublished designs or sketches which are hidden to the eye of wider audience. First chapter is fully devoted to the concise history of technique of pressing glass and mention is made of so called pressing ring playing important role in it. One of the sections contains in brief Pavel Pánek's biography where some moments of crucial importance are underlined. Most important part is that, which provides with account of Pánek's works that I found either interesting or crucial for the development of pressed glass. At the beginning of the description of each piece brief description of used technology is added. I am striving to emphasize Pánek's inexhaustible inventiveness and knowledge of techniques that eventually gave rise to some of his best pieces ever. It appears that in some way Pánek was to a certain extent predestined to grow into a sculptor of great providence especially for the sake of his vocational education. Due to the fact Pánek's personality faces false accusation of plagiarism and theft of foreign invention nowadays I had to include apologetic chapter in it. Art, architecture and design in the space age

Cosmic inspiration influenced huge amount of different artistic material. It was the only one topic, which went through categories such as high art and popular culture, fine and applied arts, all the medias, official and independent production, state ideology and interest of common man. Thesis tries to go through these categories high and low, fine and applied, official and independent. It divils its material into thematic chapters to achieve this goal. First of them Expand your mind deals with projects of visionary architecture, which does not try to create new "cosmic" kapes but expand - with Marshall McLuhan -man's mind and senses. Then Gravitationless state describes petting loose of Earth as principal feeling of space age. Peace and Freedom play role of contradictory ideological terms to fights between politicians, artists and spaceships. How Does Space Look Like is a question for representation of cosmic topics between abstraction and realism ant the last charter Space for Children does not show reduced version of space for children but "adult" ideological construction of connection between the youngest generation and future in space.
