The Concept of Pity and Faith in The Heart of the Matter

The main catalyst of the narrative in The Heart of the Matter (1948) is pity and faith of the main protagonist. This thesis deals with Greene's unique conception of pity and faith. It is particularly faith and pity which represent keystones in number of Greene's novels. In The Heart of the Matter, Greene's personal and religious interests culminate. The theoretical part of the thesis provides a brief and comprehensive overview of Greene's life, his religious and political views, his unrelenting interest in human experience and at the same time, it aims to place him in the context of the 20th century. The central part of the thesis is dedicated to the detailed analysis of the novel along with the interpretation of key concepts and ideas.
Reflection of the 1918 - 1919 historical events in selected South Bohemian periodic newspapers

Bachelor thesis is focused on selected periodic newspapers, published from 1918 to 1919. Its aim is to provide reflection of the historical events during the formation of Czechoslovakia as described in newspaper Jihočeské listy and evaluate its function and role amongst periodic newspapers of the region. The thesis makes use of content and comparative analysis. The bachelor thesis provides comprehensive look at historical events of 1918 - 1919. It also presents overview and brief characteristic of published regional periodic newspapers. Main part of the thesis defines events of 1918 - 1919 that we study and analyze from the point of view of newspapers. The thesis originated on the basis of available relevant bibliography and on the basis of sources deposited in the library of Czech Budweis? museum.
