Traditional Puppet Theatre in the Territory of Slovakia

The focus of the master thesis is the traditional puppet theatre in the territory of Slovakia. The master thesis deals with its history and how its tradition continues at present. It maps the development of the puppet theatre from the point of view of stage design and repertoire. It discusses the perception of puppeteers in the past, their traditional roles and at the same time it introduces the most important puppeteer families and their followers. It presents the elementary types of marionette and puppet theatre. In case of puppet theatre the master thesis points to the developmental interconnections of the origin of comical characters in particular countries and the tradition of puppet theatre in such countries as Great Britain, Italy, France, Holland, Russia, the Czech and Slovak Republic. The aim of the master thesis is to summarise the knowledge on traditional theatre and its present form in Slovakia. It also aims at the examples that revive the tradition. The work is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. The theoretical part consists of three chapters, the fourth chapter is the practical part. The first chapter examines the origin of puppets and their development. The second chapter deals with the traditional marionette theatre and its representatives, repertoire and traditional characters. The third chapter is devoted to traditional puppet theatre and it deals with its development in particular countries in more detail. The fourth chapter is the practical one and is the result of the research on traditional theatre. It contains the sources of inspiration, text, the project description and development and photographical documentation.
