Condition dependence of secondary ornamentation and mate choice in Grey Partridges
Gabrielová, Barbora ; Albrecht, Tomáš (advisor) ; Sedláček, Ondřej (referee)
This study focuses on relationships between individual condition, measures of ornament expression and mate choice in the Grey Partridge (Perdix perdix). It is based on the correlative data as well as results of manipulative experiments. I found positive correlation between the size of melanin- and carotenoid-based ornaments in partridges. The size and the redness of the carotenoid skin patch, and the size of the melanin-based feather ornamentation were associated with several measures of immunity and overall body condition (complement activity, ratio of immature erythrocytes, heterophil/leucocyte ratio, response to novel antigen). Furthermore, data from natural populations indicate that the expression of carotenoid-based ornamentation is associated with sexual attractiveness (measured as the ability to obtain a social mate) in partridges. Data from captive individuals indicate that carotenoid supplementation improves the redness of carotenoid-based ornament, while the stimulation of the immune system under increasing concentrations of supplemented carotenoids has no measurable effect on condition and physiological state. This seems to contradict predictions of the 'Carotenoid maintenance hypothesis'. Overall, results better understanding the role of carotenoid and melanin-based ornamentation in signaling...
Physiology of Carotenoids Metabolism and Ornamental Signalisation in Animals
Gabrielová, Barbora ; Albrecht, Tomáš (advisor) ; Černý, Ondřej (referee)
This theses deal with the use and utilization of carotenoids in secondary ornamentation, particularly in birds. Carotenoids have an important role in animal organisms, and the honesty of carotenoid-based signalization has traditionally been ascribed to anti-oxidant functioning of carotenoids. However, this view has been changed recently showing the potentially harmful effect of carotenoids. The deposition of carotenoids in ornamentation is driven not only by carotenoid intake, but also by physiological processes within the organism. Importantly, when the conditions are suboptimal (and the oxidative stress increases) unstable long aliphatic chains of carotenoids derive into highly reactive non-colorful apo- carotenals. Hence carotenoids may act as classical handicaps, potentially harmful to organism, and this view changes our understanding of honesty of carotenoid-based signalization. The theses focus on summarizing the current knowledge on physiological functions of carotenoids and how they affect secondary coloration, and consist of three chapters. In the first one the basic description of carotenoids is provided, along with an overview of carotenoid classification. The second chapter deals with physiological aspects which affect the carotenoid intake, metabolisation, transport to ornaments, and hypotheses...
Czech Literary Realism.
GABRIELOVÁ, Barbora
The present diploma thesis aims to monitor the extent of Czech literary realism. It builds upon previous bachelor's thesis work, further developing presented findings by extending them using data on re-editions of realistic works which were followed up to the year 1948. It uses the database of the National Library of the Czech Republic, and the resulting data is clearly presented in tables. The thesis result is a graphical visualization depicting the magnitude of the production of Czech literary realism from the beginning of the second half of the 19th century until 1948. The primary sources to be analyzed are literary-historical monographs, specifically "Průvodce po dějinách české literatury" (Guide to the History of Czech Literature, 1984), "Česká literatura od počátku k dnešku" (Czech literature from beginning to today, 1998) and "Trvání v proměně" (Duration in Transition) by Aleš Haman (2010).

Figurative means and phrasemes in written publicistics
GABRIELOVÁ, Barbora
The topic of this bachelor thesis is the figurative language and the set expressions on the figurative basis set phrases in the written journalism. The work is divided into two parts. The theoretical part describes the functional styles and explains the set phrases and figurative appellation. The attention is paid especially to the functional publicistic style. The second part contains the analysis of analytic texts from the journal Mladá fronta DNES. The aim is to find out, how these means are used, what they serve for, which of them are frequented, whether they are used with understanding and how their updating happens.
The Map of the Czech literary Realism
GABRIELOVÁ, Barbora
The aim of my bachelor thesis is to compile and visualise the database of Czech realism in literature. The first part of the thesis deals with the term of realism. The following two parts capture realistic writings in Czech literature in the period from the beginning of the second half of 19th century to 1938 in the way in which they are presented in the texts Přehledné dějiny literatury české and Dějiny české literatury II, III, IV, which I have analysed. The fourth part of the thesis is my own interpretation of found data. There are also appendixes in the thesis which contain visualisation of realistic works.
