The Greek National Revolution and its Perception in Czech Periodicals of that time

This bachelor's thesis aims to mediate the response of the Greek National Liberation Revolution in Czech periodicals of that time, on the occasion of its two hundred years anniversary. The thesis deals with the social and political perception of the revolution in its first years by the Czech revival elite. Main focus lies in the magazine Čechoslaw, which during the first two years of the uprising (1821-1822) brings contibutions of journalists who express themselves freely on the situation in Greece. It testifies about sympathies of Czech revivalists towards Greek fellow believers, their outstanding orientation in European politics and their timeless opinions. The upcoming years (1823-1824) in Čechoslaw present an echoing response of the revolution affected by a strict censorschip. A more comprehensive view of the response to the Greek Revolution is complemented by a short treatise on the nature of news in two major periodicals, namely the Dopisowatel pro Čechy a Morawany and the Wlastenský zwěstovatel. The historical context of the Greek National Liberation Revolution is presented in more detail, followed by a brief outline of its course and an introduction of the first Greek periodicals published in the Greek diaspora in Vienna.
