The image of methamphetamine in the internet version of newspaper Mlada fronta DNES.
CHADOVÁ, Andrea
This Bachelor's thesis contains theoretical findings related to the issues of the presentation of methamphetamines in the online version of the Mladá Fronta DNES newspaper. The work also includes a research section. The aim of my Bachelor's thesis is to analyse the depiction of methamphetamines in the online version of Mladá Fronta DNES, and to subsequently compare whether or not it was depicted differently from 2003 2013. The work is divided into a theoretical section and an empirical section. The first part of the theoretical section is dedicated to the topic of methamphetamine. I focus on the nature of methamphetamines from the standpoint of its chemical structure, actual form, as well as from the standpoint of the various methods of use. I also focus on the history of methamphetamines, specifically the origins of its production and use, and subsequently also its dissemination over time. I also mention the status of the issue of methamphetamines in the Czech Republic. In the final two sections, I focus on the effects of methamphetamines on the human body in terms of both the physical and psychological health of an individual, and also detail the effect of meth use in all areas of an individual's life. The empirical section utilised qualitative and quantitative methods of research. For qualitative research, I collected the required data through document analysis, during which I focused on the meaning of content of the articles. The quantitative research was conducted using content data analysis, in which I investigated individual phenomena based on established research questions and hypotheses. The sample set included 188 articles138 articles from 2013, and 50 articles from 2003. The research focuses on articles from the online version of the Mladá Fronta DNES newspaper. The results of my study point to the fact that currently, the topic of methamphetamines in the selected newspaper are often presented in connection with inaccurate or misleading terms, which can distort the reader's perception of the given topic. The study also found that Mladá Fronta DNES reacts to events related to methamphetamines in its articles, and surveys the situation surrounding the given topic. The articles contain a 9.6% increase in the volume of numeric forms of reporting. These numeric forms include such things as information on the amount of methamphetamines or the number of perpetrators in crimes related to methamphetamines. Verbal forms of reporting focus on such information as specific descriptions of criminal perpetrators or of the crime itself. Additionally, the results indicate the fact that, from 2003 to 2013, the number of articles focusing on methamphetamines grew, in which this number increased on an almost annual basis. The difference in the presentation of the given topic has not changed between 2003 and 2013articles from both years contain the same level of negative predictions for the future. The results of this Bachelor's thesis can serve to inform the media on the presentation of the topic of methamphetamines in society. Overall, this work indicates that, in its presentation of the topic of methamphetamines, the media should focus more on future outlooks and on possible solutions for issues related to methamphetamines.
