Jets in Heavy Ion Collisions at the ATLAS Detector
Spousta, Martin ; Dolejší, Jiří (advisor) ; Chýla, Jiří (referee) ; Bielčíková, Jana (referee)
After some introduction to the quantum chromodynamics and physics of the heavy ions collisions, and after a brief review of the ATLAS detector, the attention is focused to the main aim of the work. The main aim of the work is to develop and test algorithms suitable for the jet reconstruction in heavy ion collisions at the ATLAS detector. After the detailed description of these algorithms and their implementation to the official software of the ATLAS detector, the author analyzes their performance and provides expectation of accuracy of jet measurements in the heavy ion collisions. The rest of the work focuses on a possibility to study the influence of jets by the medium created in heavy ion collisions.
Investigation of properties of the top quark with the ATLAS experiment at LHC
Berta, Peter ; Leitner, Rupert (advisor) ; Bielčíková, Jana (referee) ; Kepka, Oldřich (referee)
This thesis presents the measurement of the differential cross section of the top-antitop pair production in proton-proton collisions at center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV at the ATLAS experiment. The measurement is performed for top-antitop events in the single lepton decay channel in the boosted topol- ogy. The measured differential cross section is expressed as a function of the top quark transverse momentum at particle level and at parton level. The mea- sured distributions are compatible with the theoretical predictions of the Standard Model. The experimental techniques used in this measurement are discussed with emphasis on the jet reconstruction and on the identification of jets originating from b-quark fragmentation. The jet reconstruction is influenced by simultane- ous proton-proton collisions (pileup), and the mitigation of these pileup effects is studied. A novel pileup subtraction technique for jets is proposed using an ex- tension of the methods currently being employed by the LHC experiments. The new method has a good performance in removing the pileup contributions at the level of jet constituents. 1

Title: Study of jet production with the ALICE experiment at the LHC Author: Vít Kučera Department: Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics Supervisor: RNDr. Jana Bielčíková, Ph.D., Nuclear Physics Institute of the ASCR, v.v.i. Abstract: The theory of strong interaction, quantum chromodynamics, predicts a phase transition between hadronic matter and the quark-gluon plasma where quarks and gluons are deconfined. This state of matter is expected to be created in ultra-relativistic collisions of heavy ions. Jets from partons which interact with the strongly interacting matter created in heavy-ion collisions can be used as probes to study this medium. The ALICE experiment installed at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN enables using jets to study medium in heavy-ion collisions. An analysis of data measured with the ALICE experiment in 2010 in the lead nuclei collisions at energy √ sNN = 2.76 TeV is presented in the thesis. The results of this analysis are presented in a study of jets reconstructed with the kt and anti-kt algorithms. The study includes an analysis of tracks, an analysis of background and focuses on an analysis of inclusive jet spectra. Various aspects of jet spectra are studied including modification of jets in the central collisions expressed by the ratio RCP. Also a summary of author's...

Title: Study of jet fragmentation and inclusive jet production in heavy-ion colli- sions with the ATLAS experiment Author: Mgr. Radim Slovák Institute: Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics Supervisor: Mgr. Martin Spousta, Ph.D., Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics, Charles University Abstract: This thesis presents two measurements - measurement of the jet frag- mentation functions and inclusive jet production in heavy-ion collisions. The frag- mentation functions are measured in Pb+Pb and pp collisions with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The distributions are measured as a function of jet trans- verse momentum and rapidity. The analysis utilises an integrated luminosity of 0.14 nb−1 of Pb+Pb data and 4.0 pb−1 of pp data collected in 2011 and 2013, respectively, at the same centre-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV. Modest but signif- icant centrality-dependent modifications of fragmentation functions in Pb+Pb collisions with respect to those in pp collisions are seen. Measurements of the yield and nuclear modification factor, RAA, for inclusive jets are performed us- ing 25 pb−1 of pp data at √ s = 5.02 TeV and 0.49 nb−1 of Pb+Pb data at √ sNN = 5.02 TeV. The jets are measured over the transverse momentum range of 100-1000 GeV in six rapidity intervals covering |y| < 2.8. The magnitude of the RAA...

Title: Study of jet production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC Author: Mgr. Zuzana Barnovská Department: Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics Supervisor: RNDr. Jana Bielčíková, Ph.D., Nuclear Physics Institute of the ASCR Abstract: The goal of this thesis is to study strange particles (Λ, ¯Λ a K0 S) in jets at the energy of √ sNN = 200 GeV in d+Au and Au+Au collisions measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC in 2007 and 2008. After the application of geometrical and topological limits, jets were reconstructed with the kT and anti- kT jet algorithms and special selection criteria for strange particles were applied. Ratios of the production of strange baryons and mesons in jets were calculated and compared to previous results of inclusive V0 particle production measured by the STAR experiment. Study of centrality dependence of these ratios was performed and compared to values in d+Au collisions. Keywords: jets, d+Au collisions, Au+Au collisions, STAR, RHIC 1

Title: Study of strange particle production in jets with the ALICE experiment at the LHC Author: Vít Kučera Institute: Institute of Particle and Nuclear Physics Supervisors: RNDr. Jana Bielčíková, Ph.D., Nuclear Physics Institute of the CAS; Dr. Christian Kuhn, Institut Pluridisciplinaire Hubert CURIEN Abstract: Quark-gluon plasma is a state of matter existing under extreme energy densities and temperatures where quarks and gluons are deconfined. Complex phenomena occurring in the plasma emerge from the strong interaction of its constituents. This hot and dense strongly interacting matter can be created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and its properties can be studied by measuring particles produced in the collisions. Partons produced in hard scatterings interact with the medium which modifies the production of particles in jets. Measurements of spectra of identified particles produced in jets represent an important tool for understanding the interplay of various hadronization mechanisms which contribute to the particle production in the medium created in heavy-ion collisions. In this thesis, we present the measurement of the pT spectra of Λ baryons and K0 S mesons produced in charged jets in central Pb-Pb collisions at the energy √ sNN = 2.76 TeV, measured in the ALICE experiment at the LHC. The...
Study of jets in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at LHC
Rybář, Martin ; Dolejší, Jiří (advisor) ; Bielčíková, Jana (referee) ; Kupčo, Alexander (referee)
Highly energetic jets are considered to be a direct probe of hot and dense QCD medium created in heavy ion collisions. Jet measurements performed both at the LHC and RHIC indicate a presence of the jet quenching phenomenon. This thesis summarizes ATLAS jet heavy ion measurements and it reports the first exploratory study of properties of the multi-jet production in heavy ion collisions presented in terms of yield of neighbouring jets. The work is expected to shed a light on the process of the parton energy loss. The measurement is performed using the Pb+Pb collision data collected by ATLAS detector during the 2011 LHC runs at the nucleon-nucleon center of mass energy of 2.76 TeV. 1
