Frank Sibley and the Theory of Aesthetic Supervenience
BARTOŇOVÁ, Alžběta
This thesis will cover the work of the British philosopher Frank Neal Sibley and the theory of aesthetic supervenience. The theory of aesthetic supervenience deals with the complex yet highly interesting relationship between non-aesthetic and aesthetic properties. Sibley's ideas focused primarily on the analysis of the applicability or definability of aesthetic concepts with which he opened the door for this theory without him later claiming it. The theory has the ambition to contribute to Sibley's analysis and thus find certain general rules that would offer an understanding for the use of aesthetic concepts in aesthetic judgements. The aim of this thesis is to show that the aesthetic supervenience does not actually resolve Sibley's thoughts about the existence of general rules for the use of aesthetic concepts.
