Testing of surfactants for copolymerization of acrylic monomers
Novotný, Igor ; Arvai, Tomáš (referee) ; Kučera, František (advisor)
The Bachelor thesis deals with testing effect of surfactants for preparing acrylate copolymers of methyl methacrylate and butyl arylate via emulsion copolymerization. The effect of concentration of surfactant used to rate of copolymerization during copolymerization was investigated. By DLS was measured particle size and relative average molecular weight was determinate via capillary viscometer for characterization of prepared copolymers. Data acquired from measurements were compared and analyzed if it has some contribution when surfactants are mixed together.
Preparation of acrylic copolymers via emulsion polymerization
Arvai, Tomáš ; Petrůj, Jaroslav (referee) ; Kučera, František (advisor)
The diploma thesis deals with preparation of acrylic copolymers via emulsion polymerization technique. Two sets of copolymer samples were prepared within this thesis, n BA/MMA and 2-EHA/MMA copolymers. n-BA/MMA copolymer sample was used for investigation of effect of surfactant concentration as well as effect of addition of acrylic acid to the feed composition. During all the copolymerizations, conversion was observed via solids content evaluation as the reaction progressed. Copolymerization was lead under inert atmosphere at continuous stirring and 80 °C for 4 hours. Glass transition temperature of samples was determined with DSC and Vicat softening point was measured as well. Data acquired from measurements were compared with values calculated with Fox equation which was used for modelling molar ratio of monomers in initial feed.
Technological optimization of a pilot line for production PP-g-IAH
Arvai, Tomáš ; Petrůj, Jaroslav (referee) ; Kučera, František (advisor)
The bachelor thesis deals with optimization of a pilot line for production polypropylene grafted with itaconic anhydride. Theoretical part describes actual knowledge about radical grafting of polyolefins with emphasis on the variety of factors affecting melt grafting. Extruded mass per hour, torque and die pressure were measured during all extrusions within optimization. Two sets of samples were prepared in the co-rotating twin-screw extruder (Brabender 25 DSE L/D = 34). Sample set prepared at 200 °C ranged from 1:2 to 1:20 molar ratio of initiator/monomer, set prepared at 230 °C ranged from 1:4 to 1:20 molar ratio. Parameters set for all extrusions were 30 RPM, reaction time 3 minutes. All samples contained the same mass concentration of monomer 0.5 %, initiator selected 2,5-di(tert-butylperoxy)-2,5-dimethylhexane (Luperox 101). Degradation of samples was observed through MVR measurements, monomer content in extruded samples was analyzed by acid-base titration and FT-IR spectroscopy.
Technology of emulsion polymerization
Chadima, David ; Arvai, Tomáš (referee) ; Kučera, František (advisor)
The diploma thesis deals with the influence of technological parameters on the emulsion copolymerization of methyl methacrylate with n butyl acrylate. The theoretical part contains knowledge in the field of influences of proces tempereture, concentration of initiator, concentration of emulsifier, stirring rate and dose rate on emulsion polymerization. In the experimental part was observed effect of the concentration of the ionic emulsifier, nonionic emulsifier, furthemore was observed effect of stirring speed and the concentration of initiator K2S2O8 on conversion of copolymerization. During all copolymerizations, conversions was determinated via solids content evaluation. By dynamic light scattering was determinated and presented polymer particle size of the prepared emulsions. Stability of emuldions was observed via effect of different ionic strenght and yield of freeze thaw cycles coalescence. Based on experimental results were proposed conditions of polyacrylic lattex preparation.
