The Phenomenon of Colour
Čáp, Rebecca ; Krajný, Boris (advisor) ; Šimonková, Dagmar (referee) ; Klánský, Ivan (referee)
In my thesis I will explore the phenonemon of colour. The first chapter deals with the historical developement of colour, the developement of Colour Organs and the psychological properties of the eleven basic colours. Chapter II explores the rare phenonemon of Synaesthesia, the mixing of senses: the ability to see colours when listening to music, or when reading letters or numbers. Many composers, musicians and authors had this ability. I will explore in depth two composers who gave prominence to colour in their compositions: Alexander Skriabin and Olivier Messaien. Chapter III deals with Claude Debussy, the great "Painter in Music", who composed highly coloured compositions and was hugely interested in visual art. In the last chapter I will discuss various pianists and their views on piano sound and the production of colour. The Appendix contains charts illustrating the psychological properties of keys and various contrasting colour - key analogies. There are also many drawings and photographs.
