The comparison of acoustic properties of guitars from the same product line
Trávníčková, Hana ; Indrák, Michal (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
This work is dealing with acoustic features of Furch guitars. In theoretical introduction is possible to find an information about basic characteristics of a tone. Following chapter about acoustic guitars is dealing even with mostly used types of woods for their manufacturing. In special chapter are described spectres of signals, LPC analysis, sound radiation of instruments and Chladni figures. Mentioned terms have been evaluated from measurements and are available in practical part of this work also including description of implementation of the measurement. As an output of this work is a comparison of acoustic features of measured guitars, their colours and modes.
The Influence of single harmonics or formants on timbre color perception
Klimeš, Martin ; Indrák, Michal (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
This thesis is dealing with the research of the influence of individual harmonic on the perception of sound color. An application was created with a questionnaire in which respondents assessed a total of 29 samples on different bipolar scales. The samples were either modeled by additive synthesis or created by modifying musical instruments. The aim was to investigate how and what combinations of higher harmonic affect the perception of sound color. The experiment is based on the semantic differential method. The samples were divided into several groups and within these groups they were compared and related to the expected color perception.
The Analysis of spectrum and polar pattern of French horn with different mouthpieces and different elastic resonators
Holba, Stanislav ; Ketner, Zbyněk (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
This bachelor thesis deals with the French horn and adjusting mouthpieces for this instrument. The work briefly describes the French horn, its structure, production materials, history and development, and the description of the timbre possibilities. Furthermore, the work explains the use of the fast Fourier transform algorithm in the context of analysis. A list of characteristics features of individual tools and mouthpieces used for analysis follows. The work then compares selected tone samples of natural and valve French horns from various manufacturers, their harmonic spectra, and directional characteristics. For specific tones, a list of chosen psychoacoustic quantities is given. The obtained values are linked with the mechanical characteristics of individual instruments and mouthpieces.
Psychoacoustic Perception of Equal Instrumental Chords Distributed Differently in Stereo
Juren, Vojtěch ; Musil, Jaroslav (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
This thesis deals with psychoacoustic perception of equally instrumented chords distributed differently in stereo. Also this thesis deals with psychoacoustic perception of unequally instrumented chords distributed differently in stereo. The thesis shows what is psychoacoustic perception, according to what is sound color determined, how does masking work between sounds and for people. Next, it shows examined chords which were differently distributed in stereo. These chords were listened by 72 listeners. They did, according to given scale, evaluate intelligibility of instruments within the chord where every individual tone was played by different instrument. The instruments were categorized into three categories according to their creating higher harmonic components. Also, the listeners evaluated intelligibility of the chords. The data were evaluated with help of psychoacoustic method called semantic differential and the results were set.
The analysis of the clarinet spectrum from different manufacturers
Suchánek, Tomáš ; Mojdl, Edgar (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
Bachelor’s thesis focuses on spectral analysis of six B clarinets made by manufacturers Buffet Crampon, RZ Woodwind Manufacturing and Yamaha. Instruments were tested by two professional musicians with different timbral preferences and the resulting spectrum is then applied to how psychoacoustic measurements define timbre perception. Furthermore, the impact of different dynamics or reeds is discussed and significant part of analysis also describes directivity patterns of individual higher harmonics or characteristic formant areas.
Experimental hardware musical instrument demonstrating possible means of colour sonification
Rezek, Václav ; Jirásek, Ondřej (referee) ; Dlouhý, Dan (advisor)
The goal of this thesis was to design and build an experimental musical instrument SuperDuperRainbowThing. The experiment nature of which lies in sonification of the colour spectrum. The hardware is built using Arduino microcontroller and a single board computer Raspberry Pi. Software communicates with the hardware via a MIDI protocol and is written in Python programming language and patched in Pure Data graphical environment. The instrument creates a sound output based upon colour selected by the user in real time.
The innovation of marimba timbre using new bars, resonators, and adding virtual registers
Nop, Patrik ; Mojdl, Edgar (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
This diploma thesis focuses on suitable innovation of musical instrument marimba. The chosen problem has been verified by three optoins: new bars, new resonators, virtual registers. The work provides an analysis of the whole issue with verification of some samples and their inclusion or exclusion for further use in the research.
Analysis of Speech Masked by Noise in Public Transport Vehicles
Kobližka, Martin ; Zvončák, Vojtěch (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
This work deals with the problems of noise and speech masking in public transport . The theoretical is focused on the perception of sound in terms of loudness and frequency. The practical part includes recording noise inside public transport vehicles and determining the loudness and masking thresholds by the Zwicker method using Matlab. Furthermore, speech recording in different dynamics, listening tests and their evaluation in terms of speech intelligibility.
The spectral and directional analysis of xylophone, vibraphone and glockenspiel
Hoffman, Pavel ; Indrák, Michal (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
Bacherlor‘s thesis deals with spectral analysis and directional characteristics of idiophonic instruments, xylophone, vibraphone and glockenspiel. It analyzes various details during spectral analysis, that could have an effect on the spectrum of a given instrument, and especially on its inharmonicity, thus analyzing its effect on the hardness of mallet, dynamics and the location of the mallet striking the bars (stones, wooden plates). It examines the changes in the harmonic range and the formant areas of instruments. The thesis further describes the mallets, the instruments themselves, theoretical base and the means by which the sound samples were acquired and processed.
The analysis of psychoacoustic perception of chords composed from different full and variously colored signals
Vejmělka, Daniel ; Musil, Jaroslav (referee) ; Jirásek, Ondřej (advisor)
This thesis is dealing with the impact of frequency spectrum of musical sounds on psycho-acoustical perception of the listener. It studies how differently filled harmonic spectrums can influence listener’s ability to determine individual notes in a chord and what influence, on recognizability of a chord, inharmonic elements have. It explores different methods of psycho-acoustic measurements and further data processing. The experiment is based on a method of paired comparisons and was realized in a form of listening test with more than 100 participants. The test is focused on typical representatives of different groups of musical instruments. It studies the impact of different colors of sound used in different types of chords. It further deals with statistical processing of the recovered data.
