Paragraph as a Cognitive Unit of Non-Literary Texts
Obdržálková, Vanda ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Eichl, Radek (referee) ; Aurová, Miroslava (referee)
The present thesis analyses the paragraph structuring of non-literary texts in Czech and Spanish and in translations from Spanish into Czech. Paragraph has been defined as a textual and cognitive unit, which is characterized by a unity of topic and inner coherence and plays an important role in text production and interpretation. The central part of the thesis presents the results of an empirical analysis of three groups of non-literary texts consisting in a three-stage comparison of comparable and parallel texts. The first aim of the analysis is to detect whether there are any culture-bound differences in paragraph length and thematic structure between comparable Spanish and Czech texts. The quantitative analysis was also focused on average length of sentences. The second aim is to describe the translators' approach by comparing the translations with their respective originals. Subsequently, the translations were compared with comparable original Czech texts. Based on this comparison it has been determined to what extent the translations are oriented towards the pole of adequacy (reflecting the values of the source language), or on the contrary, towards the pole of acceptability (reflecting the values of the target language). A translation analysis attempts to describe the factors influencing the...
Anton Popovič and his contribution to the development of translation studies
Špirk, Jaroslav ; Jettmarová, Zuzana (advisor) ; Králová, Jana (referee)
This theoretic-historiographical thesis deals with the personality of the Slovak scholar Anton Popovič (1933-1984) and his contribution to translation studies between the late 1960s the early 1980s. The thesis examines the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of Popovič's theoretical work (especially Jiří Levý and František Miko), analyzes his most important publications within the field of translation studies, and discusses criticisms as well as inspirations of his conception of translation. The thesis concludes with an evaluation of Popovič's role in developing Czechoslovak and international translation studies, most importantly of the so-called descriptive translation studies, or the manipulation school. The contribution of this thesis may be regarded primarily as a first attempt at a comprehensive study of the personality and thinking of Anton Popovič.
Explicitation and translator's style
Kamenická, Renata ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Mánek, Bohuslav (referee) ; Rubáš, Stanislav (referee)
The aim of the thesis was to explore the role of explicitation as a potential parameter of individual literary translator's style, on the material of a parallel corpus of texts compiled for this purpose and covering the work of two translators along the temporal axis. The empirical study the results of which are presented in the thesis was based on the assumption that literary translators, too, are characterized by individual styles, i.e. regularities of their translation decisions typical of their work and distinguishing them from other translators (see e.g. Baker 2000). Another assumption was that explicitation, as a phenomenon studied so far especially as a potential translation universal, has also individual aspects, i.e. that by comparing the explicitation behaviours of several translators components of that behaviour contributing towards individual translator's style can be identified. Either of the two translators being compared, Radoslav Nenadál and Antonín Přidal, was represented in the corpus by 5,000-word samples of parallel text, taken from 9 translations of long literary fiction, published in the course of their translator's careers. For the purpose of this analysis a new typology of translation-inherent explicitation (and implicitation) was developed, based on the concept of metafunctions of...

Annotated translation of the book La Doma Vaquera: del campo a las pista de consurso by García Ráfolos, j.Barcelona: Editorial Hispano Europea, 2008
Kuncová, Kateřina ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Obdržálková, Vanda (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to present a functionally equivalent translation of five chapters from a book about Spanish equitation. This book was primarily aimed to Spanish readers with at least basic knowledge about the topic and about Spanish history, traditions and culture. The thesis consists of two parts: the proper text of the translation, and the following commentary which focuses first on the analysis of the original text and problematic areas which we find while translating the text, and second on strategies and shifts used for solving all of the translation problems. Each of these strategies goes with illustrations from both the original and the translated text. There is a copy of the original text and respective photos attached in the appendix.
Figures of speech in translation contemporary Venezuelan press
Melicharová, Lenka ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Ježková, Slavomíra (referee)
Diplomová práce se dělí na dvě části. První část se teoreticky věnuje metafoře a metonymii v české a španělské terminologii, definici populismu, specifickému jazyku politiků a v neposlední řadě způsobům překladu rétorických figur z češtiny do španělštiny.
Sociological aspects of translation norms in legal environments
Valenta, Jan ; Králová, Jana (advisor) ; Ježková, Slavomíra (referee)
This thesis paper attempts to discover the processes used to set up and negotiate translation norms in legal environments. It is based on the existing theoretical knowledge of legal translation and on the theoretical works on translation norms, especially the works by Gideon Toury, Theo Hermans, Andrew Chesterman and other authors. The aim of this thesis paper is to confront these theories with the every-day experiences of translating in legal environments. The research method used for this purpose is qualitative sociological research - a combination of the analytical procedures of grounded theory first drafted by Strauss and Glaser and data collection procedures based on "problem-centered interviews" and on the investigation of documents. The total of 10 respondents - translators who work or have worked in law firms - have participated in the survey. Legal translation is very specific in terms of the processes whereby translation norms are set up and negotiated. The key issue is the issue of liability. Translators employed in law firms are not liable for the final wording of the translation - it is the lawyer who is held liable for the translation that forms a part of his or her legal service or advice. This influences the mutual relations between the translator and the lawyer who plays the role of the...

V první části rigorózní práce budou tyto dokumenty popsány a charakterizovány, důraz bude kladen na varianty španělštiny v dokumentech pocházejících jednak ze Španělska, jednak z jednotlivých španělsky mluvících zemí Latinské Ameriky. Ve druhé části bude provedena translatologická analýza. Zvláštní pozornost bude věnována překladatelským problémům, identifikaci použité překladatelské metody a její poloze na ose...
