Příběh Georga Placzka (Nová fakta o jeho pozoruhodném životě a práci)
Gottvald, Aleš
The world's distinguished theoretical physicist Georg Placzek (1905-1955) cooperated with many legendary physicists of the first half of the twentieth century, yet this native of Brno is almost unknown in his homeland. Placzek's contributions to theoretical physics are important and still vivid. He was also an active participant of a number of history-making moments. In particular, he was a leader of a theoretical group in the Manhattan project – as the only citizen of Czechoslovakia. We bring many new facts, documents and photographs about Georg Placzek, his remarkable life, work and family. Many of these materials have never been published elsewhere.
Laplace's Demon vs Maxwell's Demon: From historical myths to topological evolution
Gottvald, Aleš
In sharp contrast with a common myth, Laplace appears as a pioneer of probabilistic determinism in science, with probabilities representing our incomplete knowledge. Thus, we warm that a completely false image of Laplace have developed in history of physics and philosophy. We introduce "Laplace's Demon" and "Maxwell's Demon" from an information-theoretic perspective, and indicate their omnipotent roles in physical theories, e.g., evolutionary laws with topological changes.
Proceedings of the 4rd Japan-Central Europe Joint Workshop on Energy and Information in Non-linear Systems
Gottvald, Aleš
The proceedings contain texts of 4th Japan-Central Europe Join Workshop on Energy and Information in Non-Linear Systems held in November 10-12, 200 in Brno, Czech Repiblic (one plenary lecture on mathematical modelling of induction heating of thin nonmagnetic slabs by means of Fredholm's integral equation, four sessions held on the topics of inverse problems and information physics, non-destructive evaluation of materials and structures, superconductivity and material science and combustion and fluid dynamics).
Planck's Law and the Rise of Information Physics
Gottvald, Aleš
A centennial history of celebrated Planck's radiation formula is briefly discussed from an information-theoretic perspective. A new rationale, based on Maximum Entropy Principle (MaxEnt), is suggested for the Planck formula. The MaxEnt-approach is intrinsically silent about famous quantum hypothesis, which is neiter required nor forbidden in this formalism. Some common historical myths and conceptual inconsistencies behind the Planck law are indicated, too.
Beyond the MaxEnt Principle: Bayes, Fourier, Zipf and Spirals in Metamorphoses
Gottvald, Aleš
A radical solution is offered to clarify an obscure relationship between the Maximum Entropy Principle (MaxEnt) and Bayesian Probability Theory (BPT). The logical consistency of MaxEnt and BPT is guaranteed by definition in our theory. Close links between the MaxEnt and Fourier Transform are emphasized. Reproducibility is being recognized as the fundamental precondition of the MaxEnt-formalism. Consequently, it is proposed that the MaxEnt principle manifests itself in terms of Spiral Geometries, Zipf's law, Power laws, Fractals, and many other ubiquitous reproducible phenomena.
Bayesian Entropic Evolution
Gottvald, Aleš
We develop a quantitative and experimantally testable theory of evolution, based on Bayesian and Entropic concepts. Probability and information are given central roles in evolutionary processes. Substantial evidence is now available that all logically consistent probabilistic transformations, in evolutionary processes or elsewhere, obey fundamental laws of Bayesian Probability Theory. In particular, Bayes' Theorem and the maximum Entropy Principle imply many quantitative and testable consequences also in evolutionary processes, in full analogy with Statistical Mechanics. Every evolutionary process may be treated as a chain of Bayesian probabilistic interfereces from incomplete information. Only systems equipped with a Bayesian processing layer react most rationally to a changing information environment, which brings some evolutionary advantages.
