Aerobic training in the treatment of gait disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease

This bachelor thesis investigates the effect of aerobic training on gait disorders in patients with Parkinson's disease. The specific features of gait in this disease are short, shuffling steps, slowed movement, impaired balance and reduced upper limb synkinesis. All of these features can, apart from the application of medication, be influenced to some extent by regular exercise. The aim of this bachelor thesis was to design a suitable exercise unit for these patients and to describe the effect of aerobic training on gait disorders. The theoretical part is an introduction to the issue of Parkinson's disease. Subchapters describe the definition, incidence, research history, anatomy and physiology of the basal ganglia, etiology, clinical features, stages, diagnosis and treatment. Furthermore, there is compared gait analysis of Parkinson's disease patients with healthy individuals and what the term aerobic training means. The practical part is processed in the form of qualitative research. Based on the input examination of three patients diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, I created an exercise unit, which can be found in Appendix 3. After three months, I did an output examination and compared if the created exercise unit had a positive effect in gait disorders or not. From the results, the positive effect of aerobic training on gait disorder in Parkinson's disease patients could not be clearly demonstrated. For a valid result, research would need a larger number of patients. However, patients evaluated the exercise unit positively and I believe that this work could find further application, for example in the clinical practice of physiotherapists or as an educational material for patients with Parkinson's disease and their family members.
