Charles University Faculty of Pharmacy Hradec Králové Department of Pharmaceutical Botany Candidate: Mgr. Eva Gorbunovová Supervisor: PharmDr. Jana Karlíčková, Ph.D. Title of Rigorous Thesis: Comparison of copper ion chelation by benzoic acids Copper is the third most widespread element in the human body. It is necessary to maintain the homeostasis of the organism, the proper functioning of enzymes, participate in various metabolic pathways. Benzoic acid and its derived acid belong to a group of phenolic compounds that are formed by the metabolic processing of flavonoids in the human body and can have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antitumor effects that could be used in medicine. In this rigorous thesis, the copper-chelating activity of six benzoic acids was tested at different pH values using spectrophotometric methods using hematoxylin and bathocuproinedisulfonic acid disodium salt as indicators. The top copper-chelating activity with cupric ions using hematoxylin and the bathocuproinedisulfonic acid disodium salt and copper-chelating activity with cuprous ions using bathocuproinedisulfonic acid disodium salt showed two acids, namely 2,4- dihydroxybenzoic acid and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzoic acid. Key words: Phenolic acids, benzoic acid derivatives, copper, chelating, bathocuproinedisulphonic...
