Microbial ecology of Alpine and High Arctic soils in changing climate
LULÁKOVÁ, Petra
This study has contributed to a deeper understanding of certain aspects of initial soil development in the extreme environments of the High Arctic and the High Alpine regions. Specifically, we have examined the impact of geochemistry on the initial microbial succession following deglaciation and its subsequent transition toward the predominant influence of pioneer plants over time and the process of SOC stabilization. Our focus has been on understanding substrate-microbial and plant-microbial interactions, particularly with regards to nutrient availability and stoichiometry. In addition to investigations carried out in the High Arctic regions, we conducted an incubation experiment in the High Alps. This experiment aimed to explore nutrient availability for microorganisms in relation to their response to varying high temperatures, which are observed under ongoing climate change.
Mobilisation of subglacial microbes during deglaciation and their export to downstream ecosystems
Znamínko, Matěj ; Stibal, Marek (advisor) ; Řeháková, Klára (referee)
Subglacial environments harbor active microbial communities. The composition of these communities is influenced by a number of factors, with glacial hydrology being one of the most important ones. This affects not only formation of subglacial communities but also the mobilisation of microorganisms and their subsequent release to downstream ecosystems. The seasonally evolving drainage system connects supraglacial and subglacial environments, and thus microorganisms from supraglacial environments are exported to proglacial streams along with subglacial microorganisms. The contribution of these two microbial communities to proglacial assemblage is not uniform and may be influenced by the size or geographical location of the glacier or by the phase of the glacier drainage system. Microorganisms from proglacial assemblages can form biofilms in proglacial streams or contribute to the community composition in downstream ecosystems. This work summarizes current knowledge of mobilisation and subsequent export of microorganisms from subglacial environments.
Analysis of the zone of recent deglaciation, Cordillera Blanca, Peru
Juřicová, Anna ; Vilímek, Vít (advisor) ; Burda, Jan (referee)
The master thesis is focused on analysis of the zone of recent deglaciation in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru. Geomorphological mapping that had been realized based on interpretation of the satellite data and field reconnaissance was used for interpretation of main geomorphological features and processes of the selected glacial valleys. Glaciofluvial processes and mass movements are the main processes that affected the relief in the recent period. Major differences in landforms presence and distribution have been found between the studied valleys. The main differences are between valleys located on the western side and eastern side of the mountains. Number of different sediments of different types have been identified on the western side, whereas no evidence of such sediments was found on the eastern side. These differences are probably caused by differences in geology and climatic conditions. Finally, a general sediment flux model on the information gained from the geomorfologic analysis has been created and shows space distribution of geomorphological features and processes. The analyses of the satellite data show different visual characteristics of the rocks, which has been confirmed during field works using Schmidt Hammer method. The results suggest that the rocks that have been exposed for longer time due...
Use of remote sensing for monitoring of degaciation
Soudková, Kristýna ; Vilímek, Vít (advisor) ; Štefanová, Eva (referee)
Use of remote sensing for monitoring of deglaciation The study deals with the monitoring of glaciers using remote sensing techniques. It compares the possibilities of optical and microwave sensing. The work tries to find a suitable method or type of sensor for detecting ice, snow and clouds in satellite images. In the practical part there was demonstrated unsupervised classification on the image of SPOT satellite in the area of Mount Huascarán. Images of Landsat satellite were used for identification of deglaciation in Cordillera Blanca, Peru. Key words: remote sensing, glaciers, monitoring of snow, Huascarán
