Tearing down the former Prague Jewish quarter and its response in the contemporary press
Pěnkavová, Yvona ; Sládek, Pavel (advisor) ; Boušek, Daniel (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the topic of the Prague urban renewal with a focus on the Josefov territory - the former Jewish town of Prague. The thesis aims to examine the relationship of redevelopment plans towards the Jewish monuments (especially synagogues and the cemetery) in the former Jewish ghetto, focusing on the response in then public space. What were the reactions to the demolition of Jewish monuments compared to Christian ones? The work is reconstructing the relationship of Jewish and non-Jewish public towards the faith of the formal Jewish town, based on contemporary press, materials of the Prague City Hall, and relevant legislation. Apart from often mentioned efforts for the rescue of historical monuments (Vilém Mrštík, Zdenka Braunerová), the work pays attention to the less known figure, Jewish clerk of the Prague City Hall August Stein, and his role in enforcement and realization of the urban renewal. The role of August Stein is put in the context of the demographical shift in Prague neighborhoods and the situation of Cezch Jews in the period of national tension between Czechs and Germans.
