Computation of the Q-parameter for a crack in the vicinity of an elastic-plastic material interface
Seitl, Stanislav
The different levels of a stress constraint are quantified by Q-parameter. The values of the Q-parameter are numerically estimated as a function of length of crack, material properties and with respect to bi-material interface. Corresponding calculations are performed by finite element method (ANSYS system).
Stability of a crack terminating at the interface of two materials with plasticity mismatch
Bareš, Pavel ; Knésl, Zdeněk
Paper describes a study of behaviour of a crack penetrating the interface between two materials with the same elastic modulus and different yieled stress. Based on assumption of small scale yielding conditions and taking into accounr the plasticy mismatch of both materials, conditions of stability of a crack terminating at the interface is suggested.
Critical stress for crack propagation in concrete
Náhlík, Luboš ; Knésl, Zdeněk
Concrete is modelled as a two-phase material. Behaviour of a crack with its tip on the interface between two different materials - hardened cement paste (matrix) and aggregate (particle) - is studied. In contrast to cracks in homogeneous materials the stress singularity for a crack terminating at the interface is of the type r -lambda, where the value of the stress singularity exponent, lambda, is in the interval 0 < lambda < 1. Than classical fracture mechanics theory and criterion cannot be applied. In the paper a new stability criterion is used to estimate the critical stress for the intersection of coarse aggregate particles.
Influence of bi-materials interface on crack interaction
Seitl, Stanislav
Existence of the interface between regions with different elastic properties has a pronounced influence on the behaviour of cracks. The aim of the present contribution are a modelling and analysis of two perpendiculars cracks growing in a vicinity of the interface between two different elastic materials. The dependence of stress intensity factor for mod I (KI) on the distance of a crack with respect to the interface is studied. The results contribute to better understanding of crack's behaviour in relation to microstructure of material.
Two-parameter characterisation of a crack growing in the vicinity of the material interface
Gröger, Roman ; Knésl, Zdeněk
A crack propagating in the vicinity of the material interface is analyzed. The problem is solved in the range of two-parameter linear elastic fracture mechanics. The aim of the contribution is to assess the influence of T stress on the direction of a crack growing to the interface. The interface is modelled for different material properties characterised by the Dundur's composite parameters. First the effect of the interface on T stress value is studied and values of KI, KII and T stress are estimated. Consequently the two-parameter modification of MTS criterion and Sih's SED criterion is used for prediction of a crack propagation direction. Both these approaches are compared. It is concluded that the negative values of T stress stabilize the crack propagation perpendicularly to the interface.
Estimation of the Critical Stress for Failure of a Protective Layer
Náhlík, Luboš
This contribution describes a study of the behaviour of a crack growing in a protective layer and penetrating through an interface into a substrate. Special attention is devoted to a crack touching the interface. Conditions for the stability of a crack terminating at the interface between two materials are analyzed. The problem is studied under the assumptions of linear-elastic fracture mechanics. A new tentative criterion of stability based on application of the strain energy density concept is formulated and applied to the problem. The suggested criterion is used to estimate the critical applied stress for the failure of a substrate caused by a crack growing through the protective layer. It is shown that the critical stress may strongly depend on the fracture toughness of the substrate and on the bi-material parameters.

Graphical user interface for design stabilizing controllers
Urban, Petr ; Šebek, M.
In this note we show how the problem of finding all stabilizing controllers - PI, PD, PID can be solved using the Hermite stability criterion. We make GUI - Graphical User Interface - for simple design of controllers. This report is application-oriented and therefore it has not much theoretical background.
