The Issue of Czech as a Foreign Language
STRAKOVÁ, Tereza
This thesis deals with Czech language to the intent that it is a foreign language, thus it deals with the right opposite view than usual. A reader will familiarize himself/herself with a brief history of Czech in the theory. Then he/she can look into politically oriented problems such as the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages or the matter of compatriots who have been living abroad and for whom varied programs are created by the Czech Ministry of Education. Possibilities and obligations of foreigners living in the Czech Republic are also discussed. Interested persons can learn useful information about the Association of Teachers of Czech as a Foreign Language in the last chapter. Then there are three questionnaires elaborated in the practical part of the thesis. The questionnaires study teaching Czech for foreigners at some language schools in the Czech Republic, at chosen universities in Great Britain and in the USA. The third questionnaire was handed out among more than 200 foreigners from different countries and the aim of the research was to map problems which each single nationality face when studying Czech, levels of language knowledge according to age and the length of stay in the Czech Republic etc. Characterizing the Manual made for foreigners who do not know the Roman alphabet and characterizing the most often used books in teaching Czech as a foreign language follow the mentioned questionnaires.
