Jiří Kolář's Nový don Quijote

My thesis "Jiří Kolář's Nový don Quijote" focuses on the hitherto unknown manuscript of Jiří Kolář called Nový don Quijote (The New Don Quixote). It was written between 1936 and 1938/1939; in Kolář's bibliography it thus occupies a position between the typescript "novel reafora" Rudý havran (The Red Raven, written 1934-1936) and Kolář's first published collection of poems Křestný list (Birth Certificate,1941). Nový don Quijote is a poetical autobiography and it closes the first period of Kolář's literary work. It is divided into three parts in which the author summarizes his personal, erotic and creative life and builds his "poetical genealogy". The second part contains pieces of Kolář's older work, including two extensive examples from Rudý havran. Seen from this perspective Nový don Quijote is an invaluable source for the understanding of Kolář's early published writings. My thesis is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the poetics of Nový don Quijote. It contains a brief description of formal inovations, examples of intertextuality and main motifs and themes of Nový don Quijote.
