Mechanical behaviour of variably saturated clay fills
Kostkanová, Vladislava ; Boháč, Jan (advisor) ; Kurka, Jan (referee) ; Vaníček, Ivan (referee)
Mechanical behaviour of variably saturated clay fills VLADISLAVA KOSTKANOVÁ Ph.D. Thesis - English Abstract The excavated overburden from open-cast coal mines is end-dumped in fills. Clay type soil prevails among the filled soils in North-western Bohemia. As a consequence of the character and state of the soil, together with the mining and dumping technology, a typical lumpy structure of the clay fill is formed. The filled lumps range in size and vary in mechanical properties, but stiff to solid lumps up to 0.5 m in size are prevalent. Large and open macrovoids between the single lumps are a characteristic feature of the clay fills. Clay fills exhibit a double porosity structure, consisting of intergranular porosity between the lumps and intragranular porosity inside them. The total porosity of the freshly filled soils can reach 70%. This type of clay fill structure is metastable. This thesis focuses on the problematic behaviour of clay fill soils due to their metastable structure and their partly saturated state. Long-term monitoring of matric suction at depths up to 2 metres in two reclaimed clay fills revealed two different trends. Seasonally-dependent suction oscillations were recorded in the moderate slope of the clay fill in the Bílina mine, while no suction pointing to fully saturated conditions was...
Point Pleasant bridge collapse - casual analysis of the accident
Jagoš, Jiří ; Němec, Karel (referee) ; Válka, Libor (advisor)
The bachelor thesis is focused on the analysis of the causes of the accident of the Silver Bridge, which occurred in 1967, forty years since the introduction of the bridge to the traffic. In the work are discussed in detail all possible causes of the collapse of the bridge on the basis information and facts mentioned both directly in the inquiry reports of committees, as well as in documents and literary sources, dealing with material analysis of the structural nodes of the wrecked bridge. The work carried out critical analysis of the available and relevant information about the crash. The bachelor thesis outlines also the possible causes of the fall and collapse of the bridge from structural point of view and from terms of the material.
Icelandic economy after the crisis and future perspectives on economic development
Plocková, Kateřina ; Bič, Josef (advisor) ; Karpová, Eva (referee)
Diploma thesis deals with the recovery of the Icelandic economy after the financial crisis that affected the country in 2008. The thesis is divided into four main chapters. The first chapter focuses on theoretical view on the financial crisis and the typology of each crisis. The second chapter describes pre-crisis economic development, triggers and the subsequent collapse of the banking sector. The third chapter deals with the impacts of the crisis on selected economic indicators, evaluation of the assistance provided by International Monetary Fund and outlines the issue of capital controls that were relatively controversial element of the IMF program. The last chapter discusses the question of joining the European Union in relation to the crisis and also describes the major difficult point of negotiation, namely fishing.
Ireland and Iceland and the Global Economic Crisis
Bořuta, Lukáš ; Žamberský, Pavel (advisor) ; Bič, Josef (referee)
The main objective of my thesis is to analyze and compare reactions of Iceland and Ireland to financial and economic crisis as well as the aftermath of the crisis and the process of recovery as direct consequence of these reactions. Both states had financial sector couple of times bigger than their GDP before the crisis and after the fall of Lehman Brothers they ran into some serious difficulties. However, states chose very different approaches to deal with a situation. Ireland decided to bailout its banks despite the huge increase in public debt and cost of taxpayers' money. Iceland allowed its banks to default and backed only domestic deposits. In my thesis I also analyze the fact that Ireland is a member of euro area and therefore does not possess independent monetary policy and Iceland has independent floating currency and implications that these facts had during and after the crisis on development of countries. In the last chapter I am analyzing possibilities of future development of economies and potential risks and challenges that lie ahead of them.
Identification of collapse patterns of cavitation bubbles close to a solid wall
Müller, M. ; Hujer, M. ; Kotek, M. ; Zima, Patrik
The article describes different patterns of bubble deformation during the cavitation bubble collapse close to a solid wall for different bubble-wall distances. The bubble is generated by energy discharge in water. The collapse patterns are investigated using high-speed photography. The magnitude of the bubble-wall interaction is measured using the PVDF film. The shock wave pressure in the far field is measured using the PVDF hydrophone.
Iceland's economy in the context of the global financial and economic crisis
Bořuta, Lukáš ; Cihelková, Eva (advisor) ; Bartušková, Hana (referee)
This Bachelor thesis analyzes the impact of the global financial and economic crisis on Iceland's economy and the Iceland as a whole. This thesis describes the specifics of the Iceland's economy and the events that led to economic growth from the beginning of the new millennia. It describes the causes and effects of the global financial crisis on the economic and political situation of the country. It closely analyzes the collapse of banking sector, problems with saving bank Icesave and the help provided by International Monetary Fund and surrounding countries. It also briefly describes the development of relations between Iceland and the European Union, provides a view on economic post-crisis development and its gradual recovery. It also deals with short-term forecasts of future economic development. Finally, the thesis describes the main risks and challenges that Iceland faces on its way to full recovery.
Measurement of the impulsive force generated by colapsing bubble close to a solid boundary
Müller, M. ; Unger, J. ; Holata, J. ; Zima, Patrik
The article presents experimental results of the acoustical and optical study of cavitation bubble collapse close to a solid boundary in water. The bubble was generated by discharge of low-voltage capacitor into a couple of wires closing a simple circuit. Different distances from the solid wall and different maximum bubble radii were studied. The bubble radius was studied using time-resolved photography and by PVDF film sensor glued on the solid boundary. The illumination was provided by high-power led diode. Synchronization of the system was provided by pulse generator connected to an oscilloscope. The impact power of the bubble to the wall was estimated from the time-resolved photography of the bubble and from the PVDF film sensor signal. The PVDF film sensor calibration was performed by a pendulum test to estimate the impact force.

Design of Experimental Setup for Investigation of Cavitation Bubble Collapse Close to a Solid Wall
Müller, M. ; Zima, Patrik ; Unger, J. ; Živný, M.
This paper describes the experimental setup for the investigation of the impact load from cavitation bubble collapse on a solid wall. The vapour bubble is generated inside a chamber by localized heating. The bubble collapse is initiated by a piezoelectric actuator. The collapse impact load is measured by PVDF piezoelectric transducer. The collapse is recorded by high speed CCD camera and the pressure inside the chamber is measured by dynamics pressure transducer. The system is controlled by LabView software.
PERTURBANCE ANALYSIS AND FISSION MODEL OF COLLAPSING BUBBLE
Petrík, P. ; Zima, Patrik ; Ridha, A.
A new criterion for the assessment of the reliability of the Rayleigh-Plesset equation is proposed. An analysis of the shape stability of the spherical surface of the bubble during the collapse is used to develop a physical model, which incorporates the loss of shape stability, surface energy dissipation and fission process. The model also estimates the number of bubble fragments as well as conditions for the fission to occur. Finally, some aspects of the numerical code, especially error estimation and propagation of rounding error, are discussed.
