Environmental reporting by companies according to the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) in the context of planetary boundaries
Mádrová, Klára ; Weinzettel, Jan (advisor) ; Rusová, Nikola (referee)
Environmental reporting has been developed in response to pressures from stakeholders who demand non-financial information about companies in addition to financial information. This trend is related to the expansion of the indicators of sustainability and sustainable development and the increased interest of our society in these issues. Reporting has become one of the ways to improve the sustainability of companies and thus support sustainability in general. Environmental sustainability is determined by the concept of planetary boundaries in this thesis. This thesis first summarizes the origins and development of environmental reporting, describes its benefits and risks, and presents its standards. The thesis is then specifically focused on new proposals of European Sustainability Reporting Standards that are part of the new Directive (2022/2464/EU), which came into force 5th January 2023. There are not many scientific papers that deal with these standards yet. The aim of this thesis is to find out whether sustainability standards cover global environmental sustainability issues. It shows that the new standards do indeed cover all the themes of the planetary boundaries concept. If companies take a responsible approach to reporting and managing the issues of environmental reporting, it will probably...
The biodiversity footprint of consumption in the Czech Republic
Matuštík, Jan ; Vačkářová, Davina Elena (advisor) ; Weinzettel, Jan (referee)
The exponential increase in the scale of human influence on Earth, especially in the past century, has now led to a crisis of biodiversity. Most direct drivers of the biodiversity crisis are present at local scales - local ecosystems are destroyed by a land use change, local populations are annihilated by overhunting. Nevertheless, in the globalized world, our actions do not only affect the ecosystems directly around us but also those located on the other side of the globe. Next to the direct impacts we pose on the ecosystems we live in, we are also partly responsible for the indirect, tele-coupled impacts we pose on distant ecosystems. The goal of this study is to map the impacts consumers in the Czech Republic cause to ecosystems in other countries. Environmental footprints, and specifically biodiversity footprint, are the tools commonly used to measure such distant environmental impacts and to allocate responsibility for them to the final consumers. There are currently multiple methodologies to quantify biodiversity footprint which are, nevertheless, burdened by some methodological problems or do not properly fit the goal of this study. Therefore, a novel method was developed here employing the Biodiversity Intactness Index as the measure of the state of ecosystems. This biodiversity footprint,...
Household power stations - accessibility and economic viability of technologies for household electricity generation in family houses in CR
Zlonický, Jan ; Weinzettel, Jan (advisor) ; Knápek, Jaroslav (referee)
This thesis focuses on the question whether it is economically viable to operate a system for household electricity production and if so, what are the necessary conditions to do so. In the text of this thesis a brief summary of environmental protection and sustainable development is presented, followed by the description and current state of technologies needed to construct systems for electricity production in the scale of family houses with focus on photovoltaic systems, and a description of the current legislation and administrative barriers related to this subject. Economic view (costs and return of investment) is examined in relation to multiple conditions, focus of this examination being on the geographical conditions, legislation and administrative conditions, state subsidies, electricity production and consumption profiles in the household and electricity price development scenarios. Technologies for household electricity production are therefore put into the context relevant to the citizens of the Czech Republic. The results of this work show, that the systems for photovoltaic electricity production in family houses in the conditions of the Czech Republic are economically viable with the premise that the surpluses of electricity produced are effectively consumed, for example for water...
