Classification of adjectives in Dutch

This diploma thesis deals with the semantics of Dutch adjectives, their categorization and internal classification. The first section observes and analyses the criteria for delimiting adjectives as an independent word class and establishing adjectival subcategories, as dictated by the most influential Dutch grammar publications. One key area of focus is the concept of gradability and its role in delimiting and classifying adjectives. These definitions and classifications are confronted using the scalar approach, according to which adjectives represent a scale of properties and may be sorted depending on which type of scale they express. The practical section comprises a corpus study whose aim is to examine the validity of the assumptions formulated in the theoretical introduction regarding the gradability of adjectives. Using a sample of 100 adjectival lemmas with the lowest coefficient value for the likelihood of gradability, acquired from the Dutch language corpora CGN and SoNaR, the study follows a set of morphological, syntactic, semantic and discourse variables which may warrant the use of the comparative or superlative even with adjectives which are generally considered to be ungradable. The existential use of "er" and the distribution of verbs in existential constructions

This bachelor thesis aims to analyse the use of the Dutch word er in its existential function. The analysis is based not only on the definiti-on of the characteristics of this function but also on the distinction of common features and differences between the function and other used functions of the word. Er is also compared to the English exis-tential constructions with er which display certain similarities. A part of the attention is paid to other Dutch words with partially shared features, the so-called R-words. The analysis of verbs which can be used in existential constructions is considered one of the most im-portant aims of the thesis with minor attention to the reference of the real subject and the type of adver bials in the constructions. The second part contains an analysis of examples taken from selec-ted works of fiction based on the findings from the theoretical part. These examples serve to illustrate the conditions of the use of er in existential constructions with regards to the distribution of verbs. Analysis of the Dutch Idioms Containing the Word "Money" and their Semantic Similarity with the Czech Idioms

The thesis aims to conduct a semantic analysis of the Dutch idioms containing the word "money", categorization of the idioms to semantic categories and comparison of the semantic similarity with the Czech idioms. The theoretical part describes general phraseology and also takes up with the features and the classification of idioms. Moreover, it focuses on the theory of cognitive semantics and the history of phraseology in general, within the Netherlandistics and the Czech phraseology. The practical part takes up with the characterization of the Dutch corpus, the semantic analysis of the Dutch idioms and determining of the semantic similarity in Czech. The corpus consists of 133 Dutch idioms containing the word "money". The results of the thesis show that the idioms can be categorized on the ground of their prototypical qualities or concepts. The most dominant concept is called "the power of money". In general, we can assume that the meanings of the idioms are really various and do not have to relate only with financial affairs. The analysis of the semantic similarity with the Czech idioms has shown that the most of the Dutch idioms do not have any Czech equivalent. The result of this thesis is also a Dutch-Czech phraseological dictionary.
Application of text-optimizing techniques and their influence on adequate text comprehension

This dissertation describes a research aimed at finding text-optimization techniques which would increase the comprehension and better the attitudes of the readers towards the text. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of these techniques considering the possibility of implementation into the text-production process of state and commercial institutions. The theoretical basis for text comprehension is the construction of mental representations of the text. Many factors, internal and external, can influence the construction of a correct mental representation of the text. This thesis researches the factors of text quality and attitudes towards the text. Effects of the same text manipulations of Slovak and Dutch texts were observed in three language groups. These were: a group of Slovak native speakers, Dutch native speakers and people who learned Dutch as a foreign language. For this research two texts were selected, namely the instructions provided with the tax declaration form and an instruction manual provided with a digital camera.
