Changes in nuptiality in chosen non-European countries in the 2nd half of the 20th century Abstract The main aim of this thesis is to compare timing and intensity of nuptiality in chosen non-European countries in the 2nd half of 20th century. Surveyed countries were chosen from all continents. The main criterion was availability of suitable data. The choice cannot be generalized for whole continents. But the differentiation of nuptiality and the most important trends were described. The analyse contains the portion of single according to age, singulate mean age at first marriage and in some cases distribution of fiancés according to age. This thesis shows that there was a shift of timing of marriage to older age of bridegrooms in most of chosen countries in the 70s of the 20th century. However in South America situation was a little bit different because of the high portion of people who lived in cohabitations. Values of mean age at marriage are influenced by level of literacy. Total intensity of nuptiality is influenced by increasing level of cohabitations. Key words: nuptiality, timing of marriages, intensity of nuptiality, portion of single, singulate age at first marriage.

Based on the theoretical concepts related to the selection of partner, the causes of the selection of a homogamous partner in the recent years are outlined. The period chosen shows a number of changes both in the characteristics of the marriage rate and within the society in general. However, the transformation of the society to take place from 1979 to 2008, according to the data analysis results, had no complex and unilateral impact on the development of homogamy according to the age, education and nationality. For each of the homogamy types described, a trend in their development was described based on the data, which was subsequently confronted with the theoretical premises specified in the first part of the thesis. Konrádová, Jitka ; Bartoňová, Dagmar (referee) ; Fialová, Ludmila (advisor)
The objective of this study is an analysis of infant and child mortality in Prague in the second half of the 19th century. The analysis is based on the dataset obtained from church register of selected parishes in Prague and from Austrian statistics. This study is also related to demographic theories and historical context. The death of infants and children under the age of five and infant mortality rate are analysed in dependence on sex, age and legitimacy of children. The causes of death and the seasonal trends of mortality are studied, too. The results of analysis approve the considerable decline of infant and child mortality rates in Prague and also in singles parishes, but intensity of this decline is different. Comparative analysis demonstrates that this decline occurred quite earlier and with higher acceleration in Prague compared to Czech countryside. This development and also the differences within the parishes are attached to faster expansion, advancement and modernisation of Prague (especially of some districts) in the period of global revolution. Among these changes the phenomenal progression of medical science was the main feature and its great importance to the mortality decrease is incontestable. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)

The second part contains analytic chapters such as demographic structure of the population, families and household structure and also the social structure of the population. Special attention is paid to the estimates of the population which was not included in the source, especially children from 0 to 13 years. The analyses confirmed that population in the half of the 17th century had progressive demographic structure, which was, however, deformed as a result of the previous war years (especially as a consequence of the plague epidemics). The important part of the thesis is the comparison with other regions of Bohemia in the same period. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
Cohabitations: trends and patterns
Ptáčková, Kateřina ; Bartoňová, Dagmar (referee) ; Rychtaříková, Jitka (advisor)
This work deals with assessing the trends and patterns of cohabitation in European countries. On the basis of in depth analysis of available data, the Czech Republic might be classified among countries with similar trends and patterns of cohabitation. Foreign scientific literature, international surveys, censuses and population registers were used as the source information. This study also addresses family policy and legal regulations, which govern the relationships of cohabitation, have an impact on the context of cohabitation formation and thus create the conditions in which couples decide whether to marry or not. Cohabitations is a complex and complicated phenomenon so that it is not quite possible to come to definite conclusions. The low frequency of cohabitation and high proportion of divorced cohabitants, ranks the Czech Republic into countries of central and eastern Europe. However, the cohabitation structured according to the highest level of education or other indicators is in this group wholly different. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
