Philippe Gaubert:The Works for Flute and Piano in the Light of performing and aesthetical Aspect
Pingitzer, Simona ; Válek, Jiří (advisor) ; Pivoda, Radomír (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to characterize and describe each work by Philippe Gaubert for flute and piano. It serves as a resource for explanation of the unique idiomatic style of Gaubert´s composing for flute, and it will for sure arouse interest in studying and performing his music. The technical and performance aspects of the thesis are based on the methodic guide called Méthode Complète de Flûte, whose authors are Paul Taffanel and Philippe Gaubert. The Méthode is a valuable document for the flutists of all ages and levels, and also it is an inevitable basis for a deeper analysis of Gaubert´s flute music. When studying this music it is clear, which aspects of playing were so important for these significant teachers. Firstly, it concentrates on a high-quality tone production as a primary ideal, which is desired by every flutist. Musical elements such as tone colour, technique, dynamics, articulation and phrasing are thoroughly discussed at each Gaubert´s work, using his Méthode as a guide. Each analysis also suggests the level of the work´s difficulty and possible problems with technique, rhythm, tone range and musicality.

The chapter about the life of Bohuslav Martinů is brief and is focused only on the most important facts from this area. In the second chapter there are sonatas, trios, sextets, nonets, etc. and all those pieces have their own historical ? esthetic commentary, basic info about their origination, manuscripts, issues etc. For chosen pieces (Sonata for Flute, Violin and Piano, Sonata for Flute and Piano, Promenades, Sextet) there is dedicated detailed analysis, especially formal and harmonious analysis.
