An ideal nurse in patient´s view
BEZDĚKOVÁ, Barbora
Today, every patient has a different view of what an ideal nurse should look like. The public often has no idea of the education that a general nurse must have obtained these days to carry out this special and very specific function. The thesis is focused on patients´ notion of the ideal qualities of a general nurse as well as on their perception of different kind of their education. In the researching part of the thesis, our task was to find out how patients imagine an ideal nurse, what requirements, according to them, should she meet, how satisfactory they find the nursing care in the hospital in Jindřichův Hradec, and whether they even distinguish among different qualifications of nurses. The practical part of the thesis consists of processing and evaluating of the data acquiered during the research. Two main goals have been appointed in advance. The first one concerned mapping of patients´ notions of an ideal nurse qualities. The other goal was to find out if patients distinguish different types of qualification (education) of general nurses. To achieve the goals of the thesis "An ideal nurse in patient´s view" the method of the qualitative research was appointed. Technically, the collection of data was based on a semi-standardized interview that included 10 questions. The interview was realized with randomly chosen patients of the standard ward block in the district hospital Jindřichův Hradec. The research set consisted of male and female patients at the internal clinic. Patients were partly asked also about their objective data: their age, education, and occupation. The research was conducted during January - March 2013. The collected data have been processed by Microsoft Word´s diagrams SmartArt and, subsequently, commentaries were added. The output includes also verbatim quotations of the respondents. The results make it evident that the prearranged goals have been achieved and that the research questions have been answered in a satisfactory way. Generally, the research indicates that patients imagine a nurse as a clearly and appropriately dressed woman in a working dress, willing, communicative, empathic, with nice behaviour and positive attitude towards her patients, yet not impertinent or arrogant. It has been established that patients mostly ignore the difference in education of a nurse, probably because of a wrong or insufficient orientation in that matter, and they are unable to distinguish among the medical staff. The results clarify how patients view an ideal nurse´s qualities. It is possible, on this basis, to consider the attitude of nurses to their patients, their overall appearance, and their personal character, in order to make possible adjustments towards their patients´ expectations. The outcome of the research could also be used as a supplement in the education of future nurses. The informative results will be communicated to the staff of the internal clinic where the data were collected. They will serve as a feedback for the nursing staff at the standard ward block in the district hospital Jindřichův Hradec.
