Larval and adult seed consumption affected by the degree of food specialization in Amara (Coleoptera: Carabidae)
KLIMEŠ, Petr
This is the first study in which seed consumption is assessed for all larval instars and adults of ground beetles. Three species of the genus Amara were examined. Larvae of all three instars and adults were fed seeds of three plant species Stellaria media, Capsella bursa-pastoris and Taraxacum officinale in a laboratory no-choice experiment. In general, larvae showed greater food specialization and the daily specific seed consumption was comparable or even higher in larval than in adult stage. Results suggest that also carabid larvae may be very important consumers of weed seed in the field.
Diet composition of Common Kestrels Falco tinnunculus and Long-eared Owls Asio otus coexisting in an urban environment
LÖVY, Matěj
We studied dietary composition of urban populations of Common Kestrels (Falco tinnunculus) and Long-eared Owls (Asio otus) under fluctuating vole abundance. We tested hypotheses that the proportion of alternative prey in the diet increase with decreasing vole abundance throughout the years and that alternative prey differ between raptors due to different daily activities and/or hunting techniques. Finally, we tested whether the proportion of voles in the diet is influenced by the nest position within the city.
Effect of pH on the denitrifying enzyme activity in pasture soils in relation to the intrinsic differences in denitrifier communities
ČUHEL, Jiří
The effects of pH on denitrifying enzyme activity (DEA) and on the ratio of the denitrification products, N2O and N2, were determined in three pasture soils differing in cattle impact. The linkage between intrinsic differences in the denitrifying communities and pH effects on relative N2O production was also assessed. The soils were therefore analyzed for DEA and N2O production over a range of pH values and for the kinetic constants of NO3- and N2O reductions.
Relation of Pleurocapsa cuprea Hansgirg to the genus Hildenbrandia (Rhodophyta)
CAISOVÁ, Lenka
Pleurocapsa cuprea has been originally described as a relatively common freshwater cyanobacteial species with specific habitat preferences. Due to the striking resemblance of some diagnostic features to the red algal genus Hildenbrandia, morphological, molecular as well as pigment analyses have been done to either confirm or disprove the relationship of Pleurocapsa cuprea to the Cyanobacteria.
Educative functions of a public radio broadcasting
VEJVODA, Jiří
In order to achieve an adequate analysis of educative aspects as offered by public broadcasters generally and The Czech Radio in particular, I have been focusing my attention primarily on the kind of programmes, series or channels whose content clearly concentrates on such functions. The findings about The Czech Radio education profile of today have been confronted with two out of a large number of its public service counterparts worldwide: quite intentionally, I have chosen examples which are not only mutually different but - from many points of view - contradictory. While the BBC represents a stabilized mass media institution, a respected public broadcaster whose rich tradition has nowadays been striving to survive economic pressures of our time, the Johannesburg Safm Radio 104 - 104 has been entrusted with tackling a completely different task of educational character: to build - in its content-minded broadcasting - a bridge over a bursting social landscape in a country on its painful way from a totalitarian regime of yesterday to the democracy of tomorrow. Both comparisons seem to be useful in the process of evalution of The Czech Radio's own efforts aiming at not only informing and entertaining, but educating its listeners in an adequate quality of content and, last but not least, in a reasonably attractive form accepted by a sufficiently large quantity of young audiences. Therefore the following chapters examine if this public radio in its current shape really does fullfill its educative tasks; which of its media products has it been using for this purpose; how does it compete with television and, maybe more importantly, embraces the world of new technologies, namely internet with its seductive offer of interactivity and social networks. Needless to say, there is another important - if not the most decisive - item of my investigation: to offer a small contribution to the process of teaching and learning a media literacy, avoiding traps of the media manipulation and making an adequate use of educative functions present in the public radio broadcasting.
Architectural education and its role in teaching of art education in the second level of elementary schools
PRAŽANOVÁ, Markéta
The goal of the work was effort to find reasons why to include the education in the field of architecture and environmental culture in teaching systems, mainly in the second level of elementary schools. I tried to apply these reasons into the topics of architecture training in the lessons of art education. The research among nearly 250 pupils of the 8.and 9.class of the elementary schools in big and small towns and last but not least also the discussion with the teachers of art education at elementary schools helped to the better understanding in this area. The role of architecture in fine arts, its purpose, the role of architecture in society and summary of the role of architecture at elementary schools, mainly in the lessons of art education, form parts of the overall consideration. The reason of involving architecture into teaching is the endeavour for strengthening of sensitivity towards architecture, urbanism, values of the environment. Architecture is a part of our cultural heritage and the art that touches our senses, forms our attitudes and esthetic perception of reality. Architecture is a part of everyday life and tells about the standard of society. Responsible approach towards creation of the environment and also education in this field only allow the quality that can be passed on to next generations. Currently, all developed countries have been aware of this fact and mainly in the EU countries the pressure on education of all inhabitants in the field of architecture and formation of the environment has been growing. One of the main targets is to involve the curriculum in education at elementary schools (secondary schools and also nursery schools). There should not be more curriculum, this should only be rearranged, current possibilities can be utilized and architecture topics can be included where they are now omitted and replaced by other ones. The fundament of education should be formed through familiarization and cognition of the place where we live - a village, town and environment from perspective of an inhabitant and especially of a user.
