This thesis examines how Western media framed the Kurdish Women's Protection Units (YPJ) during the Syrian war. Following the rise of the Islamic State and the battle for Kobanî, YPJ fighters were frequently portrayed as heroic and extraordinary women. However, this visibility did not result in neutral or accurate representations of the YPJ, rather media coverage reproduced pre- existing gendered and Orientalist assumptions. This thesis draws on Stuart Hall's theory of representation, Edward Said's framework of Orientalism, and feminist International Relations scholarship. Methodologically, it employs Robert Entman's framing analysis to examine recurring patterns in Western media coverage of the YPJ. The analysis identifies three dominant frames: the exceptional woman frame, the heroic-woman frame, and the objectified-woman frame, alongside a less prominent counter-frame that challenges these representations. The findings demonstrate that Western media did not simply report on the YPJ, but produced meaning through selective language, imagery, and narrative structures. The thesis argues that these frames are embedded within broader gendered and Orientalist regimes of representation, through which audiences make sense of the YPJ, the Middle East, and women's participation in conflict.
