cze Abstract:
This master's thesis examines the media representation and framing of the menstrual cycle, with a specific focus on the menstruation phase in elite sports within the environment of Czech online media. The primary objective of the research is to identify dominant media frames and to map how this often-taboo subject is constructed within the Czech media discourse. The theoretical framework is based on the concepts of the social construction of reality, agenda- setting, and framing theory. The methodological section introduces a qualitative framing analysis, which was applied to a sample of 33 relevant articles from eight selected online portals (news, sports, and lifestyle websites). The results of the analysis, covering the period from 2011 to 2025, indicate that Czech online media perceive the menstrual cycle and menstruation in sport primarily through biological and performance-based frames. In recent years, there has been a gradual shift from euphemistic stigmatization toward a more open space for the topic. However, the thesis reveals that media reflection remains predominantly reactive, is narrowly limited to the context of tennis, and frequently reduces the complex menstrual cycle solely to the bleeding phase. Furthermore, the research highlights a specific phenomenon of high author anonymity...
