cze Abstract:
This bachelor's thesis examines the impacts of economic reforms in Ethiopia after 2018, focusing particularly on their e ects on regions with an above-average share of the Oromo ethnic group. The reforms introduced by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government were presented as inclusive and aimed at balanced economic development. The goal of this thesis is to verify whether the regions inhabited by Oromos, who constitute the largest ethnic group in the country, have disproportionately benefited from these reforms. Satellite data on nighttime light intensity (VIIRS) were used as an indicator of economic activity between 2018 and 2024. The thesis compares the development of nighttime illumination in regions with an above-average Oromo population share and in other regions. The results show that although Oromo-populated regions experienced absolute growth, the weighted relative values reveal a comparable or even lower growth rate than in regions where Oromos are a minority. The findings suggest that the anticipated disproportionate positive impact of the reforms on Oromo regions was not confirmed. The results are discussed in the context of the country's ethnic composition, decentralization of power, and the continuing inequalities within Ethiopia's federal system.
