The presence of oxygen heteroatoms makes the processing renewable feedstocks difficult, as they lead to equipment corrosion and reduced fuel energy value. While traditional hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is common in treating fatty-acid-rich feeds, the oxygen-rich sources like bioalcohols make HDO impractical due to the consumption of large amount of hydrogen. Direct C-C condensation of bioalcohols including 1-butanol is a promising alternative, enabling simultaneous carbon chain extension and oxygen removal as water. Although homogeneous catalysis is already used industrially for\nmanufacturing of fine chemicals, its extensive application is limited. Research is therefore shifting towards heterogeneous catalysis and full-scale plant modeling.\n\n
