Ženské postavy a jejich genderové role ve vybraných dílech Claire Keegan

This thesis aims to observe the female characters in the selected works of Claire Keegan and analyse how they challenge, subvert or adhere to their gender roles within the context of Irish culture. The first part summarises the necessary theoretical knowledge, including terminology and the contextualisation of Keegan's life and work. Besides the literary context, the historical and sociocultural context of late 20th - and 21st -century Ireland, a timespan which Keegan thematises in her works, is outlined, and so are the developments in the social position of Irishwomen. The pivotal point of the theoretical part is an overview of the most frequent gender roles and expectations Irishwomen were to fulfil in the 20th and 21st centuries. It turns out that Irishwomen were viewed mostly from the perspective of chastity, motherhood or marriage, reflecting Irish religious sentiments. The practical part applies the theoretical findings and interprets Keegan's texts, uncovering that Keegan might illustrate how violently Irish society has treated its female citizens, particularly those who challenge their gender roles. Keegan's female characters exemplify how Irishwomen could have rejected the prescribed gender archetypes and what consequences it has brought, implying that even small rebellions were great acts...
