Peptide cyanines represent an emerging class of theranostic agents with particularly promising applications in cancer diagnosis and treatment. The modular architecture of these conjugates enables the integration of the targeting and delivery properties of the peptide component with the optical and therapeutic properties of the dye. In addition, certain cyanine dyes exhibit high affinity for the inner mitochondrial membrane and can interfere with mitochondrial physiological processes, thereby affecting cellular, tissue and organismal homeostasis. Mitochondria have been extensively studied in the context of malignant transformation and tumour progression, which makes them attractive targets for cancer therapy. Thus, further research into peptide cyanines holds considerable promise not only for oncology. but also for the treatment of other diseases. Modulární architektura těchto konjugátů umožňuje integraci naváděcích a doručovacích vlastností peptidové složky s optickými a terapeutickými schopnostmi cyaninového barviva. Navíc některá cyaninová barviva vykazují vysokou afinitu k vnitřní mitochondriální membráně a dokáží interferovat s mitochondriálními fyziologickými procesy, čímž ovlivňují homeostázu na úrovni buněk, tkání i celého organismu. Mitochondrie byly extenzivně studovány v kontextu maligní transformace a progrese nádorů, což z nich činí atraktivní cíl pro terapii rakoviny. Další výzkum peptidových cyaninů proto představuje významný příslib nejen pro onkologii, ale i pro léčbu jiných onemocnění.
