In recent years, the number of advanced (i.e. C1 - C2) learners of English in Czech secondary schools has increased from 231 in 2016 to nearly 5,000 in 2024 (Cermat, personal communication, 2025). While research shows that even at such advanced levels, students can keep improving (e.g. Lennon, 1991; Kellogg & Whiteford, 2009; Namaziandost et al., 2019), advanced students at Czech secondary schools keep working on the same material as their peers and are not given opportunities to further their already excellent language skills (Česká školní inspekce, 2019). For this to change, it is necessary to know about the areas where the students might still experience difficulties, which is why robust diagnostic tools are needed. One of the aims of this study was to develop two such tools, specifically a measure of aural vocabulary knowledge and a measure of advanced listening comprehension. The aural vocabulary measure is modelled after the 14,000 version of the Vocabulary Size Test (Nation & Beglar, 2007). However, it uses updated BNC/COCA lists and Czech translations to reduce cognitive load. Stimuli for the test were recorded in both standard British and North American English and test-takers can choose their preferred variety. C1 - C2) studentů angličtiny na českých středních školách zvýšil z 231 v roce 2016 na téměř 5 000 v roce 2024 (Cermat, emailová komunikace, 2025). Ačkoli výzkumy ukazují, že i na tak pokročilé úrovni se studenti mohou dále zlepšovat (např. Lennon, 1991; Kellogg & Whiteford, 2009; Namaziandost et al., 2019), pokročilí studenti na českých středních školách pracují se stejnými materiály jako jejich spolužáci a nemají příležitost dále rozvíjet své už tak velmi pokročilé jazykové dovednosti (Česká školní inspekce, 2019). Aby se to změnilo, je nutné vědět, v jakých oblastech by studenti mohli stále mít potíže. Proto jsou zapotřebí spolehlivé diagnostické nástroje. Jedním z cílů této studie bylo vyvinout dva takové nástroje, konkrétně test poslechové slovní zásoby a test pokročilých poslechových dovedností. Test slovní zásoby je vytvořen podle verze testu Vocabulary Size Test (Nation & Beglar, 2007), která měří znalost 14 000 nejčastěji používaných slovních rodin. Používá však aktualizované seznamy BNC/COCA a české překlady pro snížení kognitivní zátěže. Stimuly pro test byly nahrány ve standardní britské i severoamerické angličtině a účastníci testu mají možnost si vybrat svou preferovanou variantu.
