Neisseria meningitidis and Kingella kingae are both opportunistic human pathogens of the Neisseriaceae family, which normally reside as commensals in the pharyngeal microbiota. N. meningitidis can cause severe infections with fulminant progression that often lead to debilitating consequences for infected individuals. K. kingae is an emerging pathogen predominantly infecting small children. This thesis aims to characterize selected virulence factors of both species and provide an interspecies comparison of factors with analogous functions or structural similarities. Furthermore, the work examines important virulence factors specific to either N. meningitidis or K. kingae, exploring potential reasons for their species- specific roles in pathogenesis. Both similarities and differences in the mechanisms of pathogenesis are noted and explained in the context of the current published literature about N. meningitidis and K. kingae. N. meningitidis může způsobovat závažné infekce s fulminantním průběhem, které často vedou k vážným důsledkům pro nemocného. K. kingae je emergentní patogen, který převážně infikuje malé děti. Tato práce si klade za cíl popsat vybrané faktory virulence obou druhů, a také poskytnout mezidruhové srovnání těch faktorů virulence, které sdílejí analogické funkce nebo strukturní podobnosti. Práce dále prezentuje důležité faktory virulence popsané pouze u N. meningitidis nebo pouze u K. kingae, a naznačuje potenciální vysvětlení jejich druhově- specifické role v patogenezi. V práci jsou zdůrazněny podobnosti i odlišnosti mechanismů patogeneze N. meningitidis a K. kingae, které jsou vysvětleny v kontextu současné dostupné literatury.
