cze Abstract:
Snow and ice represent extreme habitats inhabited by highly specialized psychrophiles that have adapted to low temperatures and high doses of UV radiation. The thesis summarizes how modern molecular methods (18S rRNA and ITS2 sequencing) have fundamentally revised the taxonomy of these communities, revealed high cryptic diversity, and led to the description of new genera, such as Sanguina. A key topic is the role of secondary pigments, particularly astaxanthin in snow algae and purpurogalin in glacial algae, which serve as photoprotection but simultaneously cause a significant biological reduction in surface albedo of 13-44%. The study highlights in particular the effectiveness of purpurogalin, which is 3-5 times more efficient at absorbing energy than other pigments and increases cellular energy absorption by up to 50-fold. This process creates a positive feedback loop (bio-albedo feedback), in which accelerated melting (in Greenland by up to 2 cm of water equivalent per day) stimulates further algae growth. The conclusion of the study emphasizes the necessity of integrating these biological factors into climate models, where the focus has...
