This master’s thesis investigated the influence of the nozzle cross-section shape on the robotic 3D printing of polymer rods using Fused Granulate Fabrication (FGF) technology. The aim was to determine whether a non-circular nozzle cross-section with a larger perimeter to area ratio accelerates the cooling of the printed rod and improves its mechanical properties while maintaining shape stability. Five non-circular profiles and a reference circular cross-section of identical nominal area were examined. The work combined a simplified numerical analysis, used to select the profile dimensions, with experimental measurements on a robotic printing workstation. The die swell of freely extruded rods, the geometric accuracy and shape stability of the rods during printing, and their buckling and bending load capacity were evaluated experimentally. The measurements showed that the actual rod shape deviates significantly from the nominal nozzle geometry: due to the Barus effect, the cross-sectional area increased by 9.5 to 67.6 %, with slenderness being the decisive geometric factor. During printing, the rod was longitudinally stretched by the motion of the print head, which returned its cross-section back to the nominal value. Three of the five non-circular profiles outperformed the reference circular cross-section in both the buckling and bending tests. Longitudinal stretching of the rod, rather than the cooling rate itself, was identified as the dominant mechanism of improved shape stability. The thesis demonstrated that the Barus effect is an undesirable phenomenon for FGF printing, as it distorts the designed geometry and degrades mechanical properties, whereas controlled longitudinal stretching represents a tool for improving the print quality of lattice structures.
