This master's thesis addresses the optimization of energy management of a battery electric vehicle by means of reinforcement learning. The goal is to design an adaptive controller that distributes the available electrical power between the traction drivetrain, the cabin HVAC system and the battery thermal management so that vehicle range is maximized while preserving cabin comfort and safe battery operating temperatures. To this end, a mathematical model of the Škoda Enyaq iV60 battery electric vehicle is built in MATLAB/Simulink, covering longitudinal vehicle dynamics, the electric motor with regenerative braking, the cabin and battery thermal models, and rulebased protective logic. The same model is then replicated in Python as a Gymnasiumcompatible environment in which an agent based on the Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) algorithm is trained using the StableBaselines3 library. The learned policy is compared against rulebased reference strategies (Normal and ECO) on the WLTP Class 3, NEDC, FTP75 and US06 driving cycles under three ambient temperature scenarios. The thesis quantifies the benefit of reinforcement learning over the baseline strategies and discusses the feasibility of deploying such a controller in a production vehicle with respect to functional safety according to ISO 26262 and AI management requirements according to ISO/IEC 42001.
