In response to the European Union’s increasing pressure to reduce emissions and the continuous tightening of environmental legislation, modern internal combustion engines have been required to implement closed crankcase ventilation systems. However, the presence of particles in the recirculated blow-by gases leads to undesirable fouling within the intake system, negatively affecting the overall engine performance and operating characteristics. This master’s thesis deals with the deposition of oil particles on the walls of the diffuser section of a radial turbocharger compressor. The work combines a theoretical review of deposition mechanisms with numerical simulations carried out in ANSYS CFX. Due to the high computational demands, sensitivity analyses were first performed on a simplified elbow geometry in order to investigate the influence of numerical model settings on the resulting particle deposition. The knowledge obtained from these analyses, together with the optimized numerical setup, was subsequently applied to simulations of the turbocharger itself, with particular focus on the analysis of fouling processes.
